BEATLES ALBUM COVERS TO BE FEATURED ON BRITISH
POSTAGE STAMPS
Britain's
Royal Mail has announced that five of the
Beatles' classic album covers will be issued on
a set of British stamps in January. The London
Times reported that the group's With The
Beatles, Revolver, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts
Club Band, Abbey Road, and Let It Be
albums will be featured on the commemorative
stamps.

A
Royal Mail spokesman said that, "The Beatles
special stamps promise to be a big hit with fans
the world over when they go on sale... Royal
Mail is featuring some 'first class' Beatles
album covers to commemorate the UK band that
stands for all that's great in popular culture."
Last
year the official rule that the Royal Family
were the only "identifiable" living people to be
featured on stamps was lifted.
There's
no word whether other Beatles albums such as
Please Please Me, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles
For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Magical Mystery
Tour, The Beatles (commonly known as "The
White Album"), and Yellow Submarine, all
of which should also count as "first class,"
will be featured on future postage stamps.

YouTube, Warner Music
Ink Partnership

Music videos will be legally
available for the first time on
online community YouTube
after signing its first commercial
partnership with Warner Music
Group.
Music videos belonging to Warner
Music and other record companies are
regularly uploaded to YouTube by its
users but usually without permission
from the labels.
The partnership,
which has been in discussions for
months, was signed late on Sunday
afternoon. It comes just days after
Universal Music Group, which
is owned by Vivendi, described
YouTube and News Corp.'s social
networking site MySpace of being
"copyright infringers" who he said
owe the music industry "tens of
millions of dollars."
YouTube and Warner
Music said the deal would enable
both parties to generate and share
revenue created by advertising,
which will be featured around the
videos.

When You Are Walking
In Memphis: Beale

MEMPHIS,
Tenn. (AP) - Fried
grits, down-home

luxury hotel will be
central to the
newest development
taking shape in the
city's famed Beale
Street entertainment
district.
The $52 million
project, called
Lee's Landing, will
include Beale
Street's first hotel
- with a top floor

oversized rooms for

players - and a
Ground Zero Blues
Club.

"People want to hear
the real Delta
blues, and we're
going to offer
that," said Bill

Morgan Freeman
of the original
Ground Zero in
Clarksdale, Miss.
Lee's Landing is
named for Lt. George
Lee, a black World
War I veteran,
community leader and
reputed political
boss of Beale Street
in the early 1900s.
Bawdy and bustling
in those days, Beale
Street was an
entertainment and
business center
frequented by black
folks from
throughout the
Memphis and
Mississippi Delta
regions.
But by the 1970s,
the nightclubs that
once hosted
entertainers such as
W.C. Handy, Ella
Fitzgerald, Duke
Ellington and
B.B. King were
gone. Political and
social shifts had
turned the strip
into a run-down
cluster of empty
buildings.
The strip began a
comeback in the
1980s, however, and
now the Beale Street
Historic District,
with its bars,
restaurants and
shops, is a major
tourist attraction
and a key part of
the revival of
downtown Memphis.

RECORD LABEL NEWS:
SANTANA PRESENTS
BLUES AT MONTREUX OCTOBER 17
New
York, NY (September 14, 2006)—In the biggest and
most ambitious blues installment yet of Eagle
Vision’s critically-acclaimed “Live At Montreux”
series, a massive three-DVD set—Carlos
Santana Presents Blues At Montreux 2004—will
be released on October 17. This has to be looked
upon as one of the great blues “events” of the
year as Bobby Parker, Clarence “Gatemouth”
Brown and Buddy Guy each get their
own DVD…with Carlos Santana acting as
Musical Director and Lead Guitarist, and Chic’s
Nile Rodgers jamming and performing like
you’ve never heard him before.
Bobby
Parker is a DC-based bluesman who, in the
1950s, played rock’n’roll guitar behind Bo
Diddley, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and The Everly
Brothers.
The
late Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown kept
rockin’ into his 80s with a wide swath of music
in his purview. The violinist/guitarist veered
from Western Swing to Blues to Jazz to Rock in a
heartbeat. There were no musical boundaries for
this titan.
Buddy
Guy is one of the last of a dying breed.
He’s the current king of the Chicago bluesmen,
having learned from Muddy himself as well as
Howling Wolf, Guitar Slim and Willie Dixon. His
frenetic latter-day rock wildness is a direct
descendent of the days when performers had to do
something—anything!—to get the attention of
brawling boozing bar patrons who would just as
soon hit you over the head with a broken bottle
than ask for an encore. Guy is, arguably, the
most electrifying blues performer the genre has
ever seen.

ON THE BLUE HIGHWAY WITH
TOM AND CHERYL
(Installment # 3) Joining us for an early departure
from Pascagoula on Sunday morning (September 10th)
were members of O. B. Buchanan’s band,
including guitarist James Holly, with whom
Tom resumed his chat from the evening before. While
they headed directly back to Memphis, we hustled off
for a more scenic trip back to Jackson via SE
Louisiana, Natchez, and Vicksburg. Our goal was to
meet Bobby Rush on Monday for his school
youth program. Late back to Jackson from the road,
Bobby Rush (he says, “It’s not “Bobby; it’s
Bobby Rush – could be asking for Bobby Bland, you
know…”) had to cancel the school program, so
arrangements were made to meet him the following day
for lunch.
Cell phone in hand, he directs us to his home and
greets us warmly. Inside, we meet his wife, who’s on
her way to a meeting, son Carl, and granddaughter
Sharon. Waiting for a break for lunch, we witness
why Bobby Rush says he is the hardest working
musician in the business. It’s tiring just watching
this 73 year-old multi-tasker buzz about. He makes
the deals. Then he hands them off to Carl, who
“makes it happen” – contracts, travel arrangements,
details. Bobby Rush does 350 shows a year,
and it’s always been about taking care of business –
for over 40 years now.
“Hey, Bobby Rush. We caught you on a busy day.
We’ll have lunch another time.”
But, he won’t have it, and soon we’re in his car and
heading for the “Old Country Kitchen,” a
southern “soul food” kitchen disguised as a garage
in a residential neighborhood in Southwest Jackson.
Only the small “Old Country Kitchen” sign above the
door and the sweet smells wafting about in the yard
give hint to the treasures waiting inside. We’ve had
our share of soul food, but none compares to the
heavenly treats that are piled on our plates.
A
dozen local ministers, all who exchange greetings
with Bobby Rush, share the dining room with
us. Bobby explains that he works with them in doing
“jail ministry.” Conversation is as tasty as the
food. Jail ministry, life in Jackson, blues stories
– ours mostly from our on-going trip and Bobby’s
from his vast vault of tales. It got more hilarious
as it went along until we could barely maintain
ourselves while we ate. Ever the master of the quick
costume change in his shows, Bobby told us how
necessity first taught him to master this skill
years ago in Chicago while serving simultaneously as
both Emcee and headliner in a club – and getting
paid for each. Details will have to wait for
another time.

Bobby Rush with a model diddly-bow with pool cue
handle
After lunch, we got a quick tour of the home – an
“all in one” place just like the guy. Comfortable,
simple, elegant, functional. Bobby’s been here for
20 years. It’s been studio, office, packaging and
distribution center, and home. Mostly home.
Proudly displayed are a model diddly-bow – pool cue
handle joined to a cigar box, a reminder of the old
one-stringed, home-made “guitar” so many southern
musicians started with – and a glittery, gold
colored “musical note” that Bobby rescued from an
old bar where he once played. Then there are the
awards – at least a few of them. Some had to come
down for the grandkids’ room. The “hardest working
musician in the business” is much more than just
consummate musician and entertainer… He’s a family
man who’s active in his community, a spiritual
being, a business man, and a darned nice guy.

The historic Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia,
Mississippi
We
say our good-bys and head for another treat in
Bentonia, Mississippi, home of Jimmy “Duck”
Holmes owner of the historic Blue Front Café,
a jook joint opened by his mother in 1948 and kept
alive for its place in history – “not the money,”
says Holmes!!!
Before Jimmy Holmes, Bentonia was home to
Skip James, Jack Owens, and Henry Stuckey,
who Duck says was undoubtedly the originator of the
Bentonia style of Blues. James and Owens learned
from Stuckey, and Jimmy “Duck” Holmes keeps
the Bentonia blues tradition alive through his
tutoring by the now departed Owens. Unless someone
comes along to pick up the thread, “Duck” is the
last of a line, the only musician still known to be
playing the Bentonia blues.

Bentonia style bluesman Jimmy "Duck" Holmes
Jimmy is a quiet, modest man but warms to his topic
quickly, eager for us to learn about his unique
style of country blues. Soon, his guitar comes out,
and he’s hoping Tom will become the next student of
the Bentonia style. Well, that didn’t seem like it
was going to happen, so Jimmy worked through four or
five tunes, bending strings and vocals to draw those
incredibly haunting, hypnotic Bentonia sounds. We
didn’t expect a private show, but what a treat!!!
Thank you Jimmy “Duck” Holmes for another
amazing moment on our Journey!
It’s back on the Blues Road for now. Next stops will
be in northeastern Mississippi at Ole Miss in
Oxford, home of Living Blues magazine, and Holly
Springs for visits to Rust College and an adventure
-- or “misadventure” -- at Aikei Pro’s Record Store.
Back on the Blues trail,
-- Cheryl and Tom
