Biscuits & Gravy

Take one musician who loves the deep, swampy textures of the blues, and lyrics with potent imagery in the vein of Bob Dylan and Chris Whitley. Add another musician who has a taste for contemporary, brooding pop and percolating soundscapes. Add one more who knows and loves Jazz inside and out. Thought its three members have very different musical backgrounds, once combined, the sound they make seems like the perfect match. It grooves, it gets down-and-dirty, it gets mellow, it flat-out rocks. Rather than fitting neatly into a single genre, the Jeff Jones Band traverses boundaries and traditions, constantly challenging themselves to reach unique musical spaces.

What’s in a Band Name?

The Feds May Want to Know!

Blues veteran Walter Trout (pictured at left) has been touring and recording with his band “The Radicals” since 2000. Nobody thought much about the name in 2000. It was just a clever band name. In fact, in 1999 they called themselves “The Free Radicals” before shortening it a year later to just “The Radicals”.

But now, calling themselves “The Radicals” may be generating unwarranted attention from The Feds who have recently visited the website of Walter Trout and The Radicals some 81 times.  www.waltertrout.com

Or maybe The Feds are visiting because they heard about Walter Trout’s poignant song “Who’s Listenin’ In” from his 2006 release “Full Circle”. It’s about a man far away from home, calling his baby for a little dirty talk, only to discover that somebody else is listening in.  Walter sings:

“Somebody’s listening in; I can hear him loud and clear

I can hear him breathing heavy, right there in my ear

I want to talk to my baby anytime I can,

But I feel like I’ve been talking to another man’s man.”

Then again, maybe The Feds are just Walter Trout fans? Who could blame them? Since its release “Full Circle” has sustained a top 10 presence on Billboard’s Blues charts, and is receiving increasing national airplay.

Either way, The Feds seem to be on some kind of fishing expedition.

Hilton Hotels

Hilton Surpasses Harmony Piano Goal

CHICAGO -- The Hilton Harmony Piano is sporting 101 autographs after collecting signatures Wednesday from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Guy, fellow Grammy Award winner Kenny "Babyface” Edmonds and Shirley King, the "Daughter of the Blues" and scion of the legendary bluesman B.B. King.

Hilton Hotels has spent this year leading up to its sponsorship of the February Grammy Award telecasts by displaying a Gibson/Baldwin piano at its various properties, and donating $1,000 to music education programs for every artist who signs the piano.

Hilton executives presented a $100,000 heck to the Grammy Foundation for their music education program. Additionally they contributed $1,000 and 100 musical instruments to the VanderCook College of Music during a concert at the Hilton Chicago attended by children from local Boys & Girls Club and YMCA chapters.

Ultimately, Hilton stewards hope the Harmony Piano will make an appearance during the next Grammy Awards and raise more money for music education through a Sotheby's auction.

In the meantime, the Harmony Piano has enabled Hilton to convert its event sponsorship into a music platform that creates an emotional connection with consumers and simultaneously touches communities.

Blues supporters want to use Greenville center for education program

GREENVILLE — A group called Friends of the Delta Blues Festival is seeking use of the Washington County Convention Center for an educational program.

The program introduces Delta students to the area's blues heritage. It is part of the Mississippi Delta Blues and Heritage Festival.

"When we originally began in 1991, we took the program to the schools. But that became pretty hard, a job in itself," said Richard Lovings, who's with the festival's support group.

He appeared Monday before the Washington County Board of Supervisors.

Lovings said the group decided four years ago to use the convention center as a central location. The program has taught more than 50,000 students about the blues over the past 15 years.

The educational event is Sept. 7-8, and the blues festival is Sept. 16.

New Self-service E-ticketing System For Event Promoters coming to America

eTickets.to in Great Britain have launched the first totally self-service e-ticketing system for event promoters. Ticketing is crucial and usually frustrating element of any event promotion. Event promoters generally face the option of turning to a ticketing agent to provide their solution, landing their customers with a hefty booking fee.

Now there’s an alternative solution. Using the simple web-based eTickets.to service any event promoter can set up an account and be selling e-tickets for their event within 5 minutes.

The entire process is electronic, with tickets delivered instantly by email, so there’s no expensive postage and nothing to get lost (eTickets can be reissued securely in seconds).

eTickets.to does not impose any minimum fees so it’s suitable for any size of event. Clients during the test phase ranged from small club nights to the 45,000 capacity Exit Festival in Serbia.

2007 International Blues Challenge

The Blues Foundation reports that they are very busy with planning for the23rd International Blues Challenge set for February 1-3, 2007

"In recent years, we have generally had all hotel, ticket and registration information on the website by October 1.  We will certainly make that deadline but will make the information available when ready—perhaps shortly after Labor Day.  Are you wondering about any big changes for 2007?  How about band finals in the afternoon at the Orpheum Theater and Solo/Duo finals at the New Daisy Saturday night?  Just may happen.  Beale Street Clubs filled with IBC bands Saturday night?  Just may happen.  Two host hotels—just may happen.  As always, check www.blues.org for all the latest information."

Thanks Jay, Percy and Joe.  You always do a great job.  The Blues Festival Guide staff will see you in Memphis!

FESTIVAL REPORT

MAMMOTH FESTIVAL OF BEERS AND BLUESAPALOOZA

MAMMOTH LAKES, CA--AUGUST 4 & 5, 2006

Set in the beautiful high sierra community of Mammoth Lakes, the Bluesapalooza happened in early August. This is a dual event with the Mammoth Festival of Beers. For the ticket price of $45, you get the Saturday Blues Festival, a commemorative tasting glass and all the beer(s) to fill it. I don’t think they reached the advertised 50 microbreweries, but 20 or 30 tastes later…who cared?

Let’s go back to the beginning; the well-attended festival is actually two days. Starting Friday night with a tasty barbeque and music by the Shane Dwight Blues Band, Alvin Youngblood Hart’s Muscle Theory and Joe Louis Walker & the Bosstalkers. Sadly Shane Dwight was rained out (we had a chance to see them at Saturday’s event and again post-festival at Whiskey Creek Bar & Grill), but the big sky opened and Alvin Youngblood Hart took the stage. Despite the altitude (8,200ft) and dampness, he had the crowd going. A barbecued turkey leg later, Joe Louis Walker completed the meal with a dessert of sweet blues.

Saturday, equipped with our designated driver and a designated gimp (she’d just had leg surgery, but it got us a great parking spot), we ventured into the intimate wooded festival grounds. First up: Shane Dwight Blues Band. Their smoking guitar and honey harp revved-up the crowd. Hmmmmm; smoky,,,honey…time to check out the beer garden.

Next up Zakiya Hooker & Mississippi Blues (pictured at left). Boy that apple didn’t fall far from the legendary Hooker tree. She sounded great and shook and shimmied it ‘til the crowd begged for…more. We all had fun and another beer.

For the second day Alvin Youngblood Hart took the stage. A day of altitude adjustment did him well; he performed his own style of blues very smoothly. Hmmmmm; smooth…time for a trip to the beer garden.

I’m sure you get it: blues…beer…blues, and sometimes blues…beer…beer. Our group was having a great time. The food was great (except maybe next year my friend will sidestep the pork nachos), the beer was refreshing and the music just delivered you.

Kim Simmonds & Savoy Brown was great to see again; I hadn’t since back when I thought they were great rock artists. Who said Brits don’t have a sense of humor? Can’t prove that theory by him. Like royalty, Kim still rules the stage with hard-rockin’ blues.

Up next was Sugar Pie DeSanto who took us to school. At 70, she taught the difference and for such a petite little thing, she really belts it out. Traveling through the crowd, fans in trail, she blues’d and boogied everyone.

The evening wound down, beer now cost you a couple bucks but I’d had my fill anyway. The sky darkened and the stage lit up with the tremendous talents of Robben Ford. His guitar just sings for its master. Robben’s set was real jazzy. He’d right fit in at the upcoming Mammoth Jazz and Wine Festival. I have seen him with his brother, Patrick, and enjoyed the blues much more but on this beautiful night in Mammoth…he was great…it just worked.

Robben, thank you for the wonderful ending of a great festival. – Ed Porawski

The Blues Festival E-Guide will be following for the next several weeks the blues travels of newlyweds Tom Yearnshaw and Cheryl O'Grady. Cheryl is a sales rep for The Blues Festival Guide magazine, enjoying the fruits of her labors.

Tom and Cheryl’s Big Blues Adventure

"We met because we love the Blues and we can never get enough. On August 28th originating in Reno, NV we’ll start our 21 day Blues car trip. Our first stop will be Rentiesville, OK for the largest backyard blues party, the “Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival” (Sept.1,2,3 from 5PM to 5AM nightly). There will be three stages, indoors and out with 30 bands, over 200 musicians, workshops and music activities for kids throughout the festival. This is the down home festival put on by the legendary D.C. Minner and his wife Selby, both unbelievable players. Talk about being drenched in the Blues!

We then will buzz across Arkansas in route to Metropolitan Memphis for some blues history, museums, barbeque and hopefully some live music. From there we’re headed to the Gulf for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Blues Festival September 7th.  On our way we will visit Bentonia to meet up with Jimmy “Duck” Holmes who owns and runs the famous Blue Front Café (oldest jook joint). We will travel the famous Blues Highway 61 and take detours along the way. We want to hit as many of the Delta museums, clubs, record stores and historical blues sites as possible. We’ll keep you updated along the way and I’m sure we’ll come back with some incredible stories. "-- Cheryl O'Grady
