LUCKY 13

Lucky 13 delivers sassy and soulful electric and acoustic blues from Fiona Boyes, the first Australian - and first woman - to win the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. Fiona's magnetic stage presence and infectious smile have charmed audiences both abroad and in the US - she's performed at the W. C. Handy Awards, Chicago Blues Festival, Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise, and Portland's Waterfront Blues Festival.

Recording in Austin TX, Fiona was joined by a full band including special guests Marcia Ball, "Steady Rollin'" Bob Margolin , and Kaz Kazanoff & the Texas Horns to record a tour-de-force of raw acoustic blues, swing, electric blues, rockabilly - and every style of blues in between.

Lucky 13 also showcases Fiona's proficiency as a songwriter - she penned 10 of the 13 songs on the disc. Her understanding of American roots music and clever storytelling distinguishes her songs from records which merely cover blues standards. But this album is not a nostalgic walk through your parents' music collection. Boyes' contemporary sensibilities perfectly mix the soul of the blues in her songs to give this album a thoroughly fresh feel.

New Show on XM to Spotlight Blues Foundation Affiliates

The Blues Foundation is pleased to announce that Bluesville on XM Satellite Radio will be airing a new show that is dedicated to The Blues Foundation's affiliates around the world.

XM Satellite Radio

The essence of the program is to educate listeners about the grassroots programs that The Blues Foundation’s affiliate organizations are involved with year-round. The program will highlight current and annual events and programs that are sponsored or presented by our local affiliates. Each blues society does so much more than just send an act to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge; they are active in their own Blues community as well as the community as a whole. These are the people that keep the Blues alive on the city, region, state or even country level, and we want everyone to know about those activities.

Each affiliate has the right to have a local radio jock interview a representative from the society. The interview will then be sent to Memphis to be produced and edited for use on Bluesville, exit 74 on the XM highway. Production will be done by Joe Whitmer at the William Bearden Company with assistance by Willy Bearden, Executive Producer of the Blues Music Awards and the author of Memphis Blues. The theme music for the show was written and recorded by Jonn Richardson, 2005 Albert King Award winner for the most promising guitarist.

The first show is in the can. The interview was conducted by the Blues Hound from this years KBA winner for public radio, KPFT, and features the Houston Blues Society. Please check back for show times.

Now that we have the first show ready for broadcast, we will be watching the mail for your local affiliate’s interview. If you have any questions, please email joeblues.org

Blues Festival Guide "Blues Artists on the Rise"

The Blues Festival Guide and Sonicbids are proud to announce a new program called "Blues Artists on the Rise”. We will be selecting at least one Sonicbids blues artist per month for review in our weekly e-guide.

We will also be selecting from the pool of monthly winners, a grand prize winner who at the end of the year will  receive a free FULL PAGE article/feature in the Blues Festival Guide magazine. For more information or to submit your Sonicbids EPK visit   www.sonicbids.com/bluesfestivalguide

Sonicbids was launched in 2001 on a simple idea: that it should be super-easy for artists and music promoters to find each other online, without sending bulky press kits through the postal mail.

Since then, Sonicbids has become one of the fastest-growing music communities on the web trusted by over 70,000 artists and over 6,000 festivals, music conferences, and clubs from over 100 countries.

The first "Blues Artists on the Rise" winner will be reviewed in next week's Blues Festival E-guide.

Correction from last week: Jessie Mae Hemphill was actually 82 at the time of her passing, not 71 as previously reported. Our apologies.

FESTIVAL REPORT

Hot Blues and BBQ
June 23 - 24 - 25
Oxford, Michigan

The Detroit Blues Society is the oldest blues society in Michigan and there's a good reason for that. They throw a hell of a party! Take equal parts concert, festival, IBC challenge and gospel brunch and you've got what it's all about. Oxford, located just north of Detroit is a small town of 3,500 but this weekend the numbers grew as people came from as far away as Pittsburgh to attend the festivities.

Friday the music was in downtown Centennial Park where people could spread out blankets and lawn chairs and the kids had room to run and play and the music coming from an old fashion band shell. On Saturday the event was moved to the much larger Scripter Park that offered everything from a bevy of rib offerings to a beach for swimming. This day was deemed the kick off for the Detroit Blues Society's IBC Challenge with twelve hours of music, vendors, food and of course, a beer tent. Billy Davis Rhythm Machine won the competition. Also on Saturday, "The Exceptional Blues Volunteer Award" was given to Jim Zimmerman from the Saginaw Area Blues Society and a more deserving person you'll never find. Jim shows up at every, and any blues event and is first in line to volunteer to help no matter how big or small the job.  Then Sunday it was back to the band shell in Centennial Park for the music of . Calvin Cooke and Sacred Steel.

I also have to acknowledge and thank Steve Allen and his staff of volunteers from the Detroit Blues Society that put many hours into the organization and operation of this successful event. Many hours were spent planning this and the smoothness at which it ran is a testimonial to the commitment they all have for the blues and its musicians.  Tim Richards/BluesSource.com

HOUSE OF BLUES RADIO HOUR

This Week's Guest:

Larry McCray

Larry McCray's first album was recorded in a friend's basement in Detroit, in between shifts on an auto assembly line. After that, he quit his day job, hit the road, and won acclaim as one of the hottest guitar players around. Larry McCray's new album, "Live on I-75," is one smoking slab of blues guitar, and Elwood Blues is going to spin it for you, this week on the House of Blues Radio Hour.
