NEWS FLASH

He made Beatles and Stones better

Billy Preston was best known as 'the fifth Beatle,' or as one of several keyboardists who could have been 'the sixth Rolling Stone.' Without his more famous friends, though, the musical prodigy from Houston would be remembered for his own soul-charged hits, 'Nothing from Nothing' and 'With You I'm Born Again,' as well as his lively, virtuoso piano playing.

Preston died Tuesday in a hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz., after a long battle with kidney failure that had kept him in a coma since November. He was 59.

'He had a very, very beautiful last few hours and a really beautiful passing,' Preston's manager, Joyce Moore, told The Associated Press. 'He went home good.'

'Billy was a fantastic and gifted musician ... a superb singer in both recording sessions and onstage,' Mick Jagger said in a statement Tuesday. 'He was great fun to be with onstage when touring with us and I will miss him a lot.'

Neil Aspinall, manager of The Beatles' multimedia company Apple Corps, said yesterday that he was saddened to hear of Preston's death. 'Billy made memorable contributions to The Beatles' 'Let It Be' and 'Abbey Road' albums, as well as recording two solo albums for Apple Records,' Aspinall said in a statement. 'He was a good friend of Apple's and will be greatly missed.'

Preston began his career playing keyboards for Mahalia Jackson at the age of 10 and by 12 was appearing in 'St. Louis Blues,' the film about W.C. Handy, playing Handy as a boy. Preston became part of Ray Charles' band and then Little Richard's.

Then he met The Beatles. Preston became the only outside musician ever credited in The Beatles' liner notes - on 'Abbey Road' and 'Let It Be,' which George Harrison said helped keep the band together. Preston's gospel-fueled solo on 'Get Back' was one of his most recognizable contributions to The Beatles' catalog.

'They all respected him and they all liked him as a performer and a person,' said Howard Kramer, director of curatorial affairs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. 'He was the kind of guy who kept them honest when they needed to be more honest with themselves.'

Kramer said Preston's solo work - from the Grammy-winning instrumental 'Outa-Space' to ballads such as 'With You I'm Born Again' and 'You Are So Beautiful,' which he wrote for Joe Cocker - was important enough to stand on its own. 'He was a master of his instrument,' Kramer said. 'His contributions to every recording he was on were unbelievably good, so beautiful and soulful.'

Producer Rick Rubin, who worked with Preston recently on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 'Stadium Arcadium' album and on Neil Diamond's '12 Songs,' said Preston was 'a classic American artist whose sound was so distinctive.'

'If any keyboard player was asked to 'play like Billy Preston,' they would immediately know what you were talking about and, more often than not, get a huge smile on their face,' Rubin said in a statement.

Preston's musical milestones 1963: Records debut album 'Sixteen Year Old Soul'

1969: Plays organ on The Beatles' 'Abbey Road'

1971: Performs at 'The Concert for Bangladesh'

1971: Plays keyboards on The Rolling Stones' 'Sticky Fingers'

1971: Plays organ on Aretha Franklin's 'Young, Gifted and Black'

1972: Records 'Outa-Space,' which hits No. 2 on the pop charts and wins Grammy for best pop instrumental performance

1974: Co-writes 'You Are So Beautiful' for Joe Cocker 1974: Records 'Nothing from Nothing,' which hits No. 1 1975: Plays bass on Bob Dylan's 'Blood on the Tracks'

1980: Records ballad with Syreeta, 'With You I'm Born Again,' a Top 5 hit and still a wedding favorite

NAMM Awards $580,420 In Market Development Grants To Music Organizations

NAMM, the International Music Products Association, announced the 15 recipients of its 2006 grants program slated to receive $580,420 in funding to initiate and maintain Recreational Music Making programs. In July of 2005, NAMM issued a worldwide request for proposals and received a record-breaking 68 applications in response.

During the recent NAMM Board of Directors meeting, the following programs received unanimous approval:

The American Music Therapy Association will use NAMM's funding to support its early intervention program for military personnel returning from combat and their dependents, which combines Recreational Music Making with post-traumatic stress therapy techniques.

The American String Teachers Association will receive funding to support its "Extreme Strings" pilot program, which instructs public school teachers on how to incorporate alternative techniques to attract students who normally would not be interested in traditional orchestra programs.

Bands of America's SYNERGY performance troupe pilot program will benefit from the funding. It is designed to provide community-based Recreational Music Making programs such as "Family Days" in city parks where young children can hold, hear and play all types of instruments.

The Canadian Coalition for Music Education will be able to expand its annual "Music Monday" Public Relations music advocacy event with the funding. The money will also be used to enhance the Coalition's Web site and online discussion forum.

The Guitar Accessories Manufacturers Association will use the funding for continued expansion of its already-successful guitar program to 10 new training sites, including one pilot site for advanced level two training.

Guitars in the Classroom's K–6 "Strum and Sing" programs will benefit from NAMM's funding, putting it to use with the hiring and training of regional directors who will coordinate and supervise regional trainings.

International House of Blues Foundation will use the funding to expand and strengthen its "Roots of Rhythm" program offering by delivering the corresponding teacher guide and workshop to 10 locations.

The funding will help Little Kids Rock expand its successful grassroots program, which offers integrated music instruction providing basic music-making, improvisational skills and songwriting teacher training for general education teachers, elementary music educators and after-school youth workers.

The National Guild of the Community Schools of the Arts will use the funding for the "Creative Aging" project in the creation of a Web-based tool kit and training institute, which will help assist in the replication of music programs for seniors.

The Percussive Arts Society will use the funds for its Recreational Music Making pilot program, created for families with relatives in hospitals, as an introduction to the health benefits of music making.

The Percussion Marketing Council will use the funding to create more music makers by launching an "Awareness into Action" campaign, promoting their "Play Drums," "Developmental Drumming" and "Roots of Rhythm" programs through alternative channels such as parent-teacher and after-school organizations, as well as home school networks.

The funds will assist Rhythm Gym Community Outreach in the development and implementation of Recreational Music Making community outreach pilot programs.

The funding will assist Roots of Rhythm World Drumming Summer Teacher Workshop in its expansion to phase two of the training and certification in the use of the innovative Roots of Rhythm curriculum at two major universities.

NAMM funding will support Soundhouse Music Alliance's "Music Making" program for children with cerebral palsy, helping to train teachers to use a special music access kit while expanding the program's outreach worldwide.

The Technology Institute for Music Educators will apply funds to the creation of an innovative multimedia-based pilot program that uses musical concepts to teach technology, literacy and other core subjects to middle-school students.

"This funding, which is just one part of our annual outreach activities on behalf of our Members and the industry, upholds NAMM's strategy to proactively develop partnerships with organizations who support the mission of creating more active music makers," said Joe Lamond, president and CEO, NAMM.

Slick in Airline Magazine
The summer issue of Atlantic Southeast--the in-flight magazine for the regional airline of the same name features a three-page spread about 2004 Albert King Award recipient Slick Ballinger.

The article by Colleen Birch Maile is entitled "Steps Back in Time with Blues in His Soul." Among other items, the story relates that Slick's mother brought him to Memphis to the W.C. Handy Awards to celebrate his 16th birthday.

Guitar One Magazine Blues Issue
The June issue of Guitar One magazine has hit newsstands and for the second year it focuses on the Blues.

Once again, Guitar One and 2006 Keeping the Blues Alive Award recipient Journalist Sean McDevitt have put together a stellar edition. Editor in Chief Michael Mueller even talks about the KBA in his opening First Note.

If you are a guitar player and/or a blues fan, check it out. It has features on B.B. King, Hubert Sumlin and Elvin Bishop in which you can pick up guitar pointers. The accompanying CD lets you hear what they are telling you about in the magazine. There is also a very insightful interview with Bruce Iglauer on this 35th anniversary of Alligator Records, the standard for independent blues labels. Get the issue before it disappears and check out their website at Guitar One.

A helping hand for New Orleans musicians
Seattle musician, photographer, fund-raiser and tireless blues supporter Jef Jaisun (on the right pictured with Chuck Winans on the left) is heading to New Orleans this week to help rebuild musician's homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Jaisun's first order of business? To help rewire "soul queen" Irma Thomas' home in central New Orleans.

Because he'll be in New Orleans for several weeks, Jaisun won't be attending the Chicago Blues Fest for the first time in seven years.

Jaisun has long been involved in relief efforts. Last September, Jaisun and a number of other musicians raised more than $15,000 at a benefit concert at Jazz Alley. The money was turned over to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, a non-profit providing free medical care to Crescent City musicians since 1998. (Visit the Web site at www.wwoz.org/clinic) Jaisun raised another $5,000 for the clinic by selling "Bent But Not Broken" benefit T-shirts out of his living room.

In more than 30 years, Jaisun has amassed more than 500,000 images of blues musicians. "The people I've photographed reads like a Who's Who of the blues world," Jaisun says. "Over the years, I've tried to give back to as many of them as possible, whether by gifting them with photos, writing reviews of their shows, playing their music on the air or just showing up and paying the cover charge so they could get paid themselves.

"Sadly, many of these fine performers are no longer with us. The ones who are need our support more than ever, and right now some of them don't need photos, they need someone to swing a hammer. That's what I'll be doing for the next few weeks."

Jaisun is grateful for any donations or supplies for the current relief effort. Anything not used will be donated to the Musicians Clinic or other non-profit relief and rebuilding organizations. The best way to donate is to use Jaisun's Paypal account: jefjaisunphoto.com.

Clear Channel Sued Over Concert Competition

Clear Channel Communications Inc., the No. 1 U.S. radio broadcaster, was accused in a lawsuit on Friday of violating federal anti-trust laws by curtailing concert competition and jacking up ticket prices.

According to court papers, the suit accuses the defendants of breaking the law by limiting radio airtime for musicians who used competing concert promoters and inflating musicians' fees, "in some cases more than 100 percent of gross sales, in order to exclude competitors from the market."

From July 2003 until February 2006, the Justice Department probed allegations that Clear Channel tied radio airplay and the use of concert venues to musicians' use of the companies' concert promotion services.

Correction

I just might be sentenced to damnation for this one....but last week's Blues Festival E-guide mistakenly published a picture of Mitch Woods, in a story about The Reverend Billy C. Wirtz. Fortunately, many of our astute readers kindly let us know about our mistake. Our apologies to both Mitch Woods, and The Reverend.  If you didn't know the difference either, let me enlighten you...
