EDDIE TURNER The Turner Diaries
Eddie Turner
is one of the best blues guitarists alive, and his second CD for
Northern Blues demonstrates not only his prowess with the instrument,
but his terrific song-writing as well.
In 1995, Eddie
joined Otis Taylor and Kenny Passarelli to form the Otis Taylor Band,
and helped create the Otis Taylor sound. Eddie continually received rave
reviews for his psychedelic guitar-playing. In 2005, Eddie released his
first CD "Rise" to widespread acclaim resulting in a Blues Music Award
nomination for Best New Artists Debut. Now, Eddie is back to prove that
he is a guitar god of the 21st century.

NEWS FLASH |
He made Beatles and Stones better
Billy Preston was
best known as 'the fifth Beatle,' or
as one of several keyboardists who
could have been 'the sixth Rolling
Stone.' Without his more famous
friends, though, the musical prodigy
from Houston would be remembered for
his own soul-charged hits, 'Nothing
from Nothing' and 'With You I'm Born
Again,' as well as his lively,
virtuoso piano playing.
Preston died
Tuesday in a hospital in Scottsdale,
Ariz., after a long battle with
kidney failure that had kept him in
a coma since November. He was 59.
'He had a very,
very beautiful last few hours and a
really beautiful passing,' Preston's
manager, Joyce Moore, told The
Associated Press. 'He went home
good.'
'Billy was a fantastic and gifted
musician ... a superb singer in both
recording sessions and onstage,'
Mick Jagger said in a statement
Tuesday. 'He was great fun to be
with onstage when touring with us
and I will miss him a lot.'
Neil Aspinall,
manager of The Beatles' multimedia
company Apple Corps, said yesterday
that he was saddened to hear of
Preston's death. 'Billy made
memorable contributions to The
Beatles' 'Let It Be' and 'Abbey
Road' albums, as well as recording
two solo albums for Apple Records,'
Aspinall said in a statement. 'He
was a good friend of Apple's and
will be greatly missed.'
Preston began his
career playing keyboards for
Mahalia Jackson at the age of 10
and by 12 was appearing in 'St.
Louis Blues,' the film about W.C.
Handy, playing Handy as a boy.
Preston became part of Ray
Charles' band and then Little
Richard's.
Then he met The
Beatles. Preston became the only
outside musician ever credited in
The Beatles' liner notes - on 'Abbey
Road' and 'Let It Be,' which
George Harrison said helped keep
the band together. Preston's
gospel-fueled solo on 'Get Back' was
one of his most recognizable
contributions to The Beatles'
catalog.
'They all
respected him and they all liked him
as a performer and a person,' said
Howard Kramer, director of
curatorial affairs at the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in
Cleveland. 'He was the kind of guy
who kept them honest when they
needed to be more honest with
themselves.'
Kramer said
Preston's solo work - from the
Grammy-winning instrumental 'Outa-Space'
to ballads such as 'With You I'm
Born Again' and 'You Are So
Beautiful,' which he wrote for Joe
Cocker - was important enough to
stand on its own. 'He was a master
of his instrument,' Kramer said.
'His contributions to every
recording he was on were
unbelievably good, so beautiful and
soulful.'
Producer Rick
Rubin, who worked with Preston
recently on the Red Hot Chili
Peppers' 'Stadium Arcadium'
album and on Neil Diamond's
'12 Songs,' said Preston was 'a
classic American artist whose sound
was so distinctive.'
'If any keyboard
player was asked to 'play like Billy
Preston,' they would immediately
know what you were talking about
and, more often than not, get a huge
smile on their face,' Rubin said in
a statement.
Preston's musical
milestones 1963: Records debut album
'Sixteen Year Old Soul'
1969: Plays organ on The Beatles'
'Abbey Road'
1971: Performs at 'The Concert
for Bangladesh'
1971: Plays keyboards on The
Rolling Stones' 'Sticky Fingers'
1971: Plays organ on Aretha
Franklin's 'Young, Gifted and Black'
1972: Records 'Outa-Space,' which
hits No. 2 on the pop charts and
wins Grammy for best pop
instrumental performance
1974: Co-writes 'You Are So
Beautiful' for Joe Cocker 1974:
Records 'Nothing from Nothing,'
which hits No. 1 1975: Plays bass on
Bob Dylan's 'Blood on the Tracks'

hit and still a wedding favorite

A helping hand
for New Orleans musicians
Seattle
musician, photographer, fund-raiser and tireless blues
supporter Jef Jaisun (on the right pictured with
Chuck Winans on the left) is heading to New Orleans this week to help
rebuild musician's homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
Jaisun's first order of business? To help rewire "soul
queen" Irma Thomas' home in central New Orleans.
Because he'll be in New Orleans for several weeks, Jaisun
won't be attending the Chicago Blues Fest for the first time
in seven years.
Jaisun has long been involved in relief efforts. Last
September, Jaisun and a number of other musicians raised
more than $15,000 at a benefit concert at Jazz Alley. The
money was turned over to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, a
non-profit providing free medical care to Crescent City
musicians since 1998. (Visit the Web site at
www.wwoz.org/clinic)
Jaisun raised another $5,000 for the clinic by selling "Bent
But Not Broken" benefit T-shirts out of his living room.
In more than 30 years, Jaisun has amassed more than 500,000
images of blues musicians. "The people I've photographed
reads like a Who's Who of the blues world," Jaisun says.
"Over the years, I've tried to give back to as many of them
as possible, whether by gifting them with photos, writing
reviews of their shows, playing their music on the air or
just showing up and paying the cover charge so they could
get paid themselves.
"Sadly, many of these fine performers are no longer with us.
The ones who are need our support more than ever, and right
now some of them don't need photos, they need someone to
swing a hammer. That's what I'll be doing for the next few
weeks."
Jaisun is grateful for any donations or supplies for the
current relief effort. Anything not used will be donated to
the Musicians Clinic or other non-profit relief and
rebuilding organizations. The best way to donate is to use
Jaisun's Paypal account: jefjaisunphoto.com.

Clear Channel
Sued Over Concert Competition
Clear Channel Communications Inc., the No. 1 U.S. radio
broadcaster, was accused in a lawsuit on Friday of violating
federal anti-trust laws by curtailing concert competition
and jacking up ticket prices.
According to court papers, the suit accuses the defendants
of breaking the law by limiting radio airtime for musicians
who used competing concert promoters and inflating
musicians' fees, "in some cases more than 100 percent of
gross sales, in order to exclude competitors from the
market."
From July 2003 until February 2006, the Justice Department
probed allegations that Clear Channel tied radio airplay and
the use of concert venues to musicians' use of the
companies' concert promotion services.

Did you
know??? American Idol winner, Taylor Hicks (pictured at
left) was a touring bluesman at the time of his
audition.
The
Taylor Hicks Band has since renamed itself the
Little Memphis Blues Orchestra and continues to work
throughout the south.
Hicks has
performed with James Brown, Tom Petty, Jackson
Browne, Drive-By Truckers, Robert Randolph, and
contemporary blues legend Keb Mo.
He plays
guitar as well as blues harp and writes most of his own
songs. Hicks bought his first harmonica when he was 16.
Hicks signed a record contract with music mogul Clive
Davis in conjunction with 19 Recordings Unlimited.
Correction
I just might be sentenced to damnation for this one....but
last week's Blues Festival E-guide mistakenly published a
picture of Mitch Woods, in a story about The Reverend Billy
C. Wirtz. Fortunately, many of our astute readers kindly let
us know about our mistake. Our apologies to both Mitch
Woods, and The Reverend. If you didn't know the
difference either, let me enlighten you...
