POPA CHUBBY

Stealing the Devil's Guitar

Popa Chubby is simply one of the most interesting, innovative, and gifted guitarists on the scene today.

Stealing the Devil's Guitar is his most important album to date, exhibiting a breadth of creativity perhaps unexpected from the undisputed "King of the New York City Blues" who's best known for his hard-charging, guitar-driven anthems.

Popa's usual signature brand of progressive, lyrically-incisive blues and roots-rock is here, but sonically this album offers the most texturally diverse Chubby to date, with slide and acoustic guitar, mandolin, sitar and of course, a heavy dose of hard-rockin' lead guitar.

SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK & BNOIS KING

My Heart's in Texas

The guitar tandem of Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King is a true music treasure of the Lone Star state. Even though they've been playing together since 1989 and have a prolific discography, My Heart's In Texas is their first live album ever. Recorded at an authentic Texas roadhouse, J & J Blues Bar in Fort Worth, it captures their special stage magic and clearly demonstrates what makes this dynamic duo so unique.

On New Year's Eve, Joe, Bnois and the band tore through two sets of their road-tested fan favorites, drawing heavily from their two Blind Pig releases, Show Me The Money and Roadhouse Research. They also performed two originals written especially for the occasion and a pair of cover tunes that they've never previously recorded. The companion DVD release has a slightly different musical program.

NEWS FLASH

New city hall, jazz park planned near New Orleans Superdome

Under a sweeping downtown revitalization plan unveiled Tuesday, the defunct New Orleans Shopping Centre and a nearby aging government office complex would be converted into a modern 20-acre multiuse National Jazz Center and park buttressed by public office buildings.

The $715 million project, spearheaded by Strategic Hotels & Resorts, the Chicago-based owner of the Hyatt Regency New Orleans Hotel, is the first major redevelopment project announced since Hurricane Katrina.

Developers say the project would generate construction jobs, taxes and tourism and change the face of the city the way that Millennium Park has transformed Chicago, the Inner Harbor has revitalized Baltimore and the Guggenheim Museum has put Bilbao, Spain, on the international map.

The multilevel six-block park would include a 20,000-square-foot jazz performance center with seating for 1,000 people, a black-box theater with seating for 300 people, a 70,000-square-foot amphitheater with lawn seating, a 60,000-square-foot education center for children, rehearsal studios and an archive for jazz research.

The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra would be based there, which would also be a destination for national touring jazz acts. Ron Markham, president of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, said the site, near the birthplace of Louis Armstrong, would be branded as the international home for jazz. Wynton Marsalis led the design of the $120 million National Jazz Center.

"There's really no venue where the major artists on the touring network can play in New Orleans," Markham said. "We want other art forms to come and celebrate the influence of jazz on their music."

Rev. Billy C. Wirtz Gets Radio Show

You're Saved! Yes, salvation is at hand with the Reverend Billy C. Wirtz taking to the airwaves to spread the Word via the miracle of radio.

Starting last week, Friday, May 26th, the pastor of the First House of Polyester Worship and Horizontal Teenage Throbbing began hosting "The Reverend Billy's Rhythm Revival" on WFIT-FM in Melbourne, Florida. The program will air every Friday from 10 pm to midnight (EST), and can be heard live worldwide via streaming audio on the station's website (http://www.wfit.org/).

Called "part preacher, part carnival barker, part big-time wrestling announcer and full-time boogie-woogie piano player," the Reverend is also an extremely knowledgable musicologist as well as a music journalist for Blueswax.com and the Charlotte Observer. According to Wirtz, "blues, R&B, gospel, hillbilly, social commentary and musical finds from the outer reaches of reality will all be featured during the show. It will be an entirely new all-inclusive genre that I call Greasy Listening." The Reverend promises to make it "Two Hours of Uplifting Anarchy."

A live CD and DVD of a typically wacky Wirtz stage performance, entitled Sermon From Bethlehem, was released in January. Blues Revue called the Reverend "the wildest, most manic 'deep fried and santified' blues pianist around," while Prick magazine noted "the boogie rock abilities of Jerry Lee Lewis combined with the Southern comedic wit of Jeff Foxworthy."

Wirtz has been described as bizarre, disturbing, exhilarating, outrageous, cathartic and often times patently offensive, and his radio show is bound to exhibit these same qualities, not to mention being highly entertaining.

Tune in this Friday and BE HEALED!!!

NEW --  Roots Music Association (RMA)

Currently in the first stages of forming the Roots Music Association, the organization is seeking new members that are interested in becoming officers and companies that are willing to help promote roots music internationally.

"Our goal is to bring all music formats together around the globe to form an alliance that will work for the advancement of  artists and to continue our push for radio stations to start playing music that is just as good as the limited amount of Top 40 artist being played now on their stations" according to an organization spokesperson.

The Roots Music Association will become a non profit organization including Blues, Americana, Bluegrass, Folk, Reggae, True Country, Zydeco, Roots Rock, Jazz and Roots Gospel formats with massive influence within the music industry if we bring all music formats together and concentrate on helping to promote the music and the artist worldwide.
