Clifford Antone dies

Clifford Antone, whose namesake Austin Texas club has been a national landmark for the blues for more than 30 years, died Tuesday of a heart attack in his Austin home at age 56.

Clifford Antone's Austin blues nightclub Antone's helped launch the careers of such prominent  musicians as Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Candye Kane, Sue Foley and Los Lonely Boys.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Antone established his club on Austin's East Sixth Street in 1975. Antone was only 25 when he founded the club. Most of the nation's top blues acts, including John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Albert King and Buddy Guy, played there. Antone's today resides at its third location, on Austin's Fifth Street.

The venue has won countless awards including numerous Austin Music Awards, as well as being named nightclub of the year by USA Today and the W.C. Handy Awards. Besides being famous for the music and the artists that have graced it's stage, Antone's is famous for being "all ages all the time". No doubt influencing the many great blues talent's who have originated from Austin, TX.

Clifford Antone also operated a prominent independent label, Antone's Records, that recorded such acts as Doug Sahm, Pinetop Perkins, Lazy Lester, Jimmy Rogers, Luther Tucker, Sue Foley, Candye Kane, Syl Johnson and Toni Price. The label now is part of the indie label consortium the Texas Music Group. Antone also ran an eponymous Austin record store.

He will be remembered as a fount of blues knowledge -- he taught a course about the music at the University of Texas -- and an irrepressible supporter of the music he loved unequivocally.

Ironically, "Antone's: Home of the Blues," a 2004 documentary feature about Clifford Antone and his club by director Dan Karlok, is scheduled for DVD release June 6 by Koch Vision.

As a group of elder but hardly retiring American musicians return from touring France -- and their hero's reception on major stages -- they prepare to travel to Washington, DC, for The Congressional Blues festival, honoring musicians who are national treasures. Headlined by Taj Mahal, the only three-year-old but growing festival is set for one night only: Wednesday, June 21, 6:30-11:30 at Mellon Auditorium, announced Tim Duffy, president of Music Maker Relief Foundation.

In its third year the festival providesa national stage for this great art form, that is truly an Americancreation and revered internationally: roots music. Our blues artists are our national treasures," said Ryan Costello, festival founder and director.

JEREMY SPENCER SIGNS WITH BLIND PIG RECORDS

Jeremy Spencer, one of the original members of Fleetwood Mac, has signed with Blind Pig Records to release his first album since 1979, entitled Precious Little. The CD will be released on July 18, 2006.

Spencer, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for his work with Fleetwood Mac, left the group rather abruptly during Mac's 1971 American tour. Always somewhat religious, Spencer later revealed that he'd been feeling spiritually unfulfilled in the wake of the group's success. Although he's done little performing in the intervening years (he did tour India three times in the late 90's), he has used his artistic illustrating talents and played his guitar every day for all the time he's been away, and his vocals are as warm and expressive as ever.

Spencer's contributions to the highly successful first albums by Fleetwood Mac (which also included Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie) were his Elmore James-influenced blues stylings and songwriting, and he was an integral part of their stage shows. Recently he got together with his former bandmate to record a track on the Mick Fleetwood Band album Something Big.

In 2005, after many years of searching and never giving up, the promoters of the Notodden Blues Festival coaxed Spencer into performing at their event in Norway. Given a choice of several accompanying line-ups (including a group with Hubert Sumlin and Pinetop Perkins), Spencer elected to use a Norwegian blues band, some of whom had been together twenty-five years. Putting the musicians through their paces at their first rehearsal, Spencer was amazed at their sophistication and ability to immediately fall into a sympathetic understanding of his music.

Says Spencer, "I discovered that there was more interest in, knowledge and appreciation of and passion for blues in Norway than I'd encountered anywhere else in the world. In my opinion Norwegian musicians have retained the 'purity' of the old blues in their playing, with that naive spontaneity and discovery - that element of 'stretching' that puts a 'charm' on the playing."

The success of the Festival appearance naturally led to the idea of recording. With the same group of musicians, Jeremy went into a studio in Notodden, Norway which featured the late-Sixties mixing console from the famous Stax recording studio. "I felt immediately at home with the studio's vintage 'vibe,' which rarely happens to me in most state-of-the-art premises," said Spencer. The resulting album, Precious Little, shows a return to the blues and slide guitar style that he became famous for while he was with Fleetwood Mac, although with a more gentle touch, as well as shadings somewhat reminiscent of the stylings of Richard Thompson, Mark Knopfler, and Buddy Holly.

Upon hearing the completed album, Mick Fleetwood commented, "Great! All the passion, humour, poignancy, and yes, the magic touch. Congratulations on a righteous album!"

North Mississippi Allstar Front Man Luther Dickinson Hosts Mag Rack's Guitar Xpress

Mag Rack, Rainbow Media's premier on- demand television network, will re-launch its popular "Guitar Xpress" music instruction program with a new host and 30-plus new song titles-all originally produced by Mag Rack and filmed at the historic Electric Lady studios in New York City. Re-launching in May 2006, "Guitar Xpress" is hosted by Luther Dickinson, front man of the North Mississippi Allstars, who will also provide music instruction.

The first television program of its kind, Mag Rack's "Guitar Xpress" launched on the network in 2004 with step-by-step instructions for playing popular songs on the guitar. The block quickly rose to become and continues to be one of the most popular with Mag Rack viewers. This year, Mag Rack has produced original on-demand instruction for over 30 songs from an array of genres, including reggae, country, folk, blues and rock.

In January 2006, Mag Rack announced "Guitar Xpress Presents", an original 12-part showcase that takes viewers into the studio with guitar masters to hear about their life experiences and the musicians who inspired their work. Each episode features intimate live performances and archival footage from past videos and concerts. "Guitar Xpress Presents" features The Bacon Brothers, Trey Anastasio, Brazilian guitarist Seu Jorge and The Derek Trucks Band, among others.

BLUES DIVA CANDYE KANE MAKING BIG NEWS

Candye Kane and band were asked to stay an extra few days at the end of their successful three week European tour to play at the Cannes Film Festival for an exclusive soiree for French television giant, Canal + (Canal Plus). This major French network has long been supportive of Candye and her music and has featured her on television many times in the last decade.

Kane will rub elbows with Hollywood celebrities as she takes the stage in a custom made tent built to resemble the roadhouses that appeared throughout the French countryside in the 40’s and 50’s. The Etoile Rouge roadhouses were built with a large red star on top of the temporary aluminum siding and were used to present road shows and musical cabaret performances in small villages and large cities throughout France. Film festival celebrities and dignitaries will swing to the cabaret blues of Candye and company, as they are greeted by Canal Plus executives under a huge marquee of lights bearing Candye’s name.

The blues diva, (who just experienced a fire in her San Diego home during her tour) will visit Australia, and tour Europe again twice more this year. Last week, the band appeared in Amsterdam and Baarn, Netherlands for a press conference for her fall tour, United by Music. This concert tour modeled after the “American Idol” series, features special needs adults and children playing instruments, singing and performing with an American Blues band.

Tireless Candye will then return to her San Diego home just ten days before she embarks on yet another tour of the Midwest United States. Her new bassist - former Mighty Flyer Bill Stuve, son Evan on drums and guitarist Heine Andersen (Earl Thomas, Michelle Lundeen) will accompany her on this tour.

In December of this year, Kane will return to the studio to record her eighth CD, East Los Angel. The CD will be a follow up to "White Trash Girl" (Best CD of 2005 at the San Diego Music Awards and nominated for CD of the year at the Out Music Awards) Kane grew up in North East L.A. and was strongly influenced by the Chicano culture. Although only one of a few white girls at her school, she quickly learned to sing in Spanish and attended Catholic church with her homegirls. Kane describes herself as a “wanna be chicana” having a son as a teenager like many of her peers. Her son and drummer, Evan is half Mexican, created with her teenage-son of illegal immigrants-boyfriend Arturo Gutierrez. With Mexican immigration a hot topic in the USA and Latino music selling more product than any other type of music in the USA, a CD with spanish language songs and Latino appeal could be timely. Kane will enlist friends from East L.A. bands, Tierra, El Chicano, Thee Midnighters and Los Lobos to create a project that illustrates that rich cultural diversity of East Los Angeles.
