CONTEST

"WHY THEY LOVE BLUES"

Congratulations to the winners of the contest.

Check out their winning essays

Jeff Neelon -- 57, Lumberton, NC – Investment Advisor

"I love the blues because it's black and white, slow and fast, the Delta and Chicago, acoustic and electric, male and female, sad and happy, club and festival, North and South, single and group,  the US of A and around the world, young and old, BB and Bonnie, dance and clap, sit and tap, gospel and low down, and me and you."

Jill Fazio, 41, Lebanon, TN – Homemaker & Part-Time Dance Instructor

"I love blues because it takes me to a primal place, where love can be both pain and heaven.  I love the steady blues beat, predictable and beautiful in it's simplicity.  I love the way it makes my foot tap
along, slave to a heartbeat from a time I am too young to remember, and too old to forget."

“Sweet” Suzi Smith, 33, Lindenhurst, NY – Administrative Assistant by day, blues diva by night (Suzi is a member of The Blues Experience Band, an IBC finalist in 2006).

"I love Blues because it makes me reach down deep into my soul and pull out what is real.  It helps me to express how I feel and shows what I try to hide.  I love Blues because it bears into my heart and my mind and it gets my entire being flowing with emotion.  It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it makes me get down on my knees and beg for mercy."

Steven O. Sellers, 56, San Antonio, TX – Broadcaster and Musician

"I love the blues because a simple musical form digs deep into the most complicated of human emotions, and comes up with hope and promise for the future. The blues is sadness, but buried in that sadness is the seed of happiness, and the music leads you to the seed!"

Dr. Donna Flaggs, 41, East New Market, MD – Veterinarian (pictured with Shemekia Copeland)

"Everyday, life seems to poke little holes in my soul.  I turn on the blues and the holes get filled up.  It energizes me.  It gives me hope.  Blues for me are happy, not sad.  I love blues because it releases me...it relaxes me.  The soundtrack to my life is the blues.....The Dr. is in; let the blues music begin...... "

Congratulations!  We are glad you love the blues!

NEWS FLASH

BB KING - "The Show Must Go On"

If there was anyone who would have had reason to postpone a concert on this evening, it was blues legend B.B. King. One of his sons had passed away earlier in the week, and a great-grandson had died earlier that day. But the “King of the Blues” did not ask to reschedule the show. Instead, B.B. and his band entertained a nearly-full house with music, stories and some friendly advice for two hours.

Then King came on stage to the first of several standing ovations he would receive this night. Not long after, B.B. told the crowd of his recent misfortunes, but added that what helped him through it all was to see their “bright and smiling faces.” King then proceeded to show his appreciation the best way he knew how: with his music.

Throughout the evening, King reminded the audience that he appreciates their loyalty, a sentiment he expressed in the last song of his set, “Guess Who.” The fans returned the favor with another standing ovation.

While the years and various ailments have slowed the 80-year-old guitarist down (he has to sit during the majority of his time on stage these days), it has not hampered B.B.’s lifelong love of the blues, or his ability to play them with all of his heart and soul.

CANDYE KANE is having a really good week

Ruf Records recording artist, Blues Diva and California native Candye Kane is known for many things and this week added three more accomplishment's to her already long list of notables.

This week Ms. Kane was named by readers of the French Magazine Sur la route de Memphis (blues rock country monthly magazine) as 2005 Blues Group/Singer of the year ...beating out Eric Clapton; plus "White Trash Girl" was name the 2005 Recording of the year....beating out BB King's "80". WOW! Very impressive.

Also announced this week Ms. Kane is nominated for a 2006 Outmusic Award in two categories: "Outstanding New Recording-Female" and "Outstanding CD Graphic Design" for "White Trash Girl"

While packing for her new European tour which opens on April 26th in Poland, Ms. Kane took the time to write and announce another new venture.

"I want to tell you as well about the tour we will be doing in the fall in the Netherlands called United by Music. It is like an American Idol show  (except not mean spirited or bitchy) for disabled people. They are having auditions now and the winners will get to sing with an American blues band on a tour. (that's us!) I am very excited about this tour and the response has been fantastic. We will do a press conference about it on May 15th when I am in Amsterdam. We did one show like this last summer in Sliedrecht and I invited some of the disabled kids onstage to sing with me.

The crowd loved it and so did the kids, so it seemed logical to try it again in a bigger and better way. It is all being organized by my friend and fan, Joris Wijngarden. If you know any Dutch journalists or photogs who may be interested in this project, please send them our way so we can notify them about the press conference. This project will be a wonderful thing, especially because I believe that the love and applause from a crowd can be magically healing. I also think its symbolic since these people face huge challenges in their every day lives and my challenges seem tiny and insignificant compared to theirs! there is a website under construction www.unitedbymusic.nl  and there is a documentary planned to chronicle the tour and to follow around three of the people who will be in the show. I am very excited about this wonderful opportunity to help people and to make music together."

JEFF HEALEY Makes Speedy Recovery From Cancer Operation

Musician JEFF HEALEY underwent a successful operation this past Wednesday in Toronto's Mount Sinai hospital to have a cancerous growth removed from his left thigh.

This was the second such sarcoma for Healey, who had another removed in May last year. Regular testing caught both occurrences early, and a speedy recovery is expected again, with Healey already up and around the day after the operation.

Healey was born with a rare gene defect which predisposes him to cancer growth, having lost his eyesight at the age of one to retino blastoma, a form of eye cancer. Healey stresses that those who have had cancer continue routine check-ups to detect and prevent further occurrences.

Salgado who is battling a chronic liver condition will receive treatments next month with the hope of a liver transplant surgery in the future. A concert performance in Spokane, WA has been rescheduled for June 3rd. Doctors are confident that the 52-year old performer and his band will be able to continue to perform this year. The singer-songwriter and harmonica idol was raised in Eugene, OR where he is best known as the inspiration for John Belushi‚s character of Joliet Jake in the Blues Brothers as well as his six year involvement with the Robert Cray Band.
