Slick Ballinger- Mississippi Soul
The spirit of the blues moves Daniel "Slick" Ballinger like the spirit of the lord moves a preacher. Hailed by many as a prodigy, he is in the midst of transforming into a deep bluesman. Born May 26, 1984, this young man with an old soul developed an intense love and appreciation of Traditional Blues.

"...That young man is an entertainer...He's keeping the blues moving forward while respecting the past." - B.B. King

"WHY I LOVE BLUES"

Tell us....tell the world. Win great prizes!

Contest Extended until April 5th

 email to e-guideBluesFestivalGuide.com

in 75 words or less "I love Blues because...."

The world's biggest blues labels have contributed some terrific prizes for the 5 winners. Each winner will receive "35X35" Alligator Records 35th anniversary double CD, plus Bernard Allison's "Energized" double CD from Ruf Records and from Blind Pig Records, Magic Slim and the Teardrops "Anything Can Happen" on DVD.  All  5 winners will have their essays published in the annual Blues Festival Guide Magazine, due out April 24th.

35 X 35-35 Songs, 35 Years Years of Genuine Houserockin' Music  Alligator Records celebrates their 35th anniversary with a double CD collection highlighting some of their most popular recordings over the years as well as some hidden gems.

Bernard Allison  2-CD-set from Ruf Records. Recorded live at the MUSA in Göttingen/Germany, 20th October 2005. Fans everywhere have been begging him to put out a new live project. ENERGIZED was certainly worth the wait. Bernard Allison keeps the famous family name alive and delivers an outstanding live show.

Magic Slim & the Teardrops "Anything Can Happen" DVD from Blind Pig Records. Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers alike. It's no wonder that Magic Slim & The Teardrops, considered by many to be "the last real Chicago blues band," have become one of the busiest and best-loved touring units today. This live recording, taped in 2005 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery, showcases Slim's slashing, vibrato-drenched guitar and mountain-moving vocals, and presents an authentic South Side, back-alley excursion into the true blues. The DVD includes extra selections and an interview.

JUDGING - Our judges will be looking for point-of-view. There's a million reasons to Love the Blues, so be a little unique, and speak from your heart. (Almost like writing a blues song, but you don't need to find the rhyme).  Put a little time into your answer.  The prizes are worth it.

Celebrity Judges from the world's top Blues Record Labels will pick 5 winners.

From Alligator Records, Mr. Bruce Iglauer

from Ruf Records, Mr. Thomas Ruf

NEWS FLASH

FCC Hits "The Blues" with Indecency Fine In its first indecency rulings under chairman Kevin J. Martin, the Federal Communications Commission appeared to toughen indecency standards for all broadcasters as well as apply the standards more narrowly.

In perhaps the most controversial ruling, KCSM, the educational nonprofit station in San Mateo, Calif., was fined $15,000 for airing Martin Scorsese's PBS documentary, The Blues: Godfathers and Sons , which contained numerous profanities. One commissioner, Jonathan S. Adelstein, expressed reservations about the ruling, saying it didn't consider context as the FCC previously has done with such prestige films as Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

But the FCC decided instead to rely on its decision against the Golden Globe Awards, where the singer Bono used the f-word. At the time, commissioners said context didn't matter because the word was in itself indecent.

The FCC decided not to issue fines over Nicole Richie and Cher's use of the f-word at separate Billboard Music Award shows, saying that at the time its policy was not to cite the isolated use of expletives.

Blues in the Schools program with Fruteland Jackson will be showcasing students from the Marietta
Middle School at the Washington State Community College at the end of a two-week artist residency that begins on March 13 2006 and will end on March 25th. Students will learn to play the guitar and harmonica. Students will keep journals write book reports and prepare for stage presentation as well
as learn blues history. They will recieve certificates of participation and other awards. Steve Pottmeyer will provide harmonica instructions. This artist residency is sponsored by the Blues, Jazz and Folk Music Society of Marietta,Ohio.

Technology Gets the Blues TextPayMe, a technology company out of Washington, is coming to the aid of the Arkansas Blues & Heritage Festival (formerly known as King Biscuit). “The festival is amazing” commented Philip Yuen, CEO of the TextPayMe and former resident of New York, “it brings 100,000 music fans from around the world to a small delta town, all for the love of music. The festival is free – it is a living museum to music.” TextPayMe is offering $5 to each new person who signs up for their service for a limited time.  The sign up and basic service is free – and you can donate the $5 immediately to King Biscuit.

The festival is presented free to encourage people to understand the history and culture of the region through music. The festival has won national awards, tourism awards and been ranked by Travelocity and Southern Living as one of the top attractions in the United States.
