CHRISTMAS HARMONICAS
Christmas
may already be blue for
Canadian troops
separated from family
and friends while posted
in Afghanistan this
year.
But
they'll be able to give
musical voice to their
feelings when 2,600
Delta Blues harmonicas,
one for each soldier,
land as gifts from a
Halifax-based musical
instrument retailer.
 Elderly
harmonica player arrested for
performing copyrighted songs at bar
in Japan, a 73-year-old bar manager
who illegally performed copyrighted
tunes by the Beatles and other
artists on the harmonica was
arrested Thursday on suspicion of
violating the Copyright Law, police
said.
Arrested was Masami Toyoda, of
Tokyo's Nerima-ku. He has reportedly
admitted to the allegations against
him.
Investigators accuse Toyoda of
illegally performing 33 songs such
as the Beatles' songs "Here, There
and Everywhere" and "Yesterday,"
whose copyrights are managed by the
Japanese Society for Rights of
Authors, Composers and Publishers.
He allegedly performed the songs on
the harmonica with a female pianist
at the bar he operated between
August and September this year.
Officials said the society sought a
provisional injunction against
Toyoda in 2001 because he had
repeatedly performed copyrighted
songs in the past without
permission, and the Tokyo District
Court granted the injunction.
The society filed a criminal
complaint against him in September
this year because he later kept
playing copyrighted songs.

Singer Bonnie

We mourn the

FOR SALE
INDIANOLA,
MS —
Mary
Shepard
has seen
them
all.
Denise
LaSalle,
Rufus

Bobby

Little

are
among
the
scores

Now,
after 32
years of

the

Shepard
is ready
to step
aside.
The

announced
recently
that she
intends
to sell
Club
Ebony so
she can
spend
more
time
with her
family.
"It's
gonna
take me
a while
to get
used to
it,"
Shepard
said as
she
talks
about
her
history
at Club
Ebony.
The year
was
1974.
Shepard's
husband
sustained
a
paralyzing
injury
while
serving
in
Vietnam.
The club
was
vacant,
so she
took
over
management.
"He
loved to
shoot
pool and
be
around
people,"
she
said.
"This
way, he
would be
able to
enjoy
himself.
So I
decided
to rent
it."
A year
later,
the
building's
owner,
People's
Bank of
Indianola,
told
Shepard
the
property
was
going to
be sold.
Even
though
she
couldn't
afford
it, the
banker
offered
her a
loan.
Food
offerings
in
Shepard's
early
days as
club
owner
were
simple.
Fried
chicken,
bologna
sandwiches,
buffalo
fish and
hamburgers
were on
the
menu.
Meals
were
cooked
with her
mother's
"big

"We

Shepard
said
with a
smile.
Club
Ebony
then
started
hosting
blues

Shepard's
first
big
attraction:
Little

Shepard
hadn't
changed
anything
about
Club
Ebony's
appearance,
leaving
intact a
blue-and-white
polka
dot wall
and a
matching
loveseat.
King
wasn't
having
any of
that.
"He
stopped
the band
and
called
me out
to the
stage,"
Shepard
said.
"He said
if I
didn't
get rid
of that
blue and
white
polka
dot, he
would
never
play for
me
again."
The
banker
loaned
Shepard
the
money
for
cosmetic
changes.
Wood
paneling
was
installed
throughout
the
building,
and a
drop
ceiling
was
installed.
Shepard
points
to an
orange
light
fixture
near the
entrance.
"That's
the
original
light,"
she
said.
For the
past
three
years,
the

has also
hosted
the

ERIC CLAPTON'S "BLACKIE" STRATOCASTER Reproductions of Eric Clapton "Blackie" Stratocaster guitar, which were true to the original down to the cigarette burn marks, went on sale through the Guitar Center retail chain on Friday (November 24th), and were gone in about seven hours. There were only 185 instruments made, so the quick sell-out might not be surprising -- until you factor in that each guitar was priced at $20,000+.

ERIC CLAPTON ANNOUNCES NEW TOUR DATES
Eric Clapton will kick off the second leg of his North American tour Feb. 28 in Dallas, hitting 11 states in the Southwest, Midwest and on the West Coast, as well three Canadian provinces. Robert Cray will again open, as he did on Clapton's recent East Coast dates.
Clapton tour includes a lot of dates in California and surrounding states - because they're the only places he'll be able to convince new collaborator JJ CALE to play. Clapton, who recorded Cale classics AFTER MIDNIGHT and COCAINE, teamed up with his blues hero for the first time on the new album THE ROAD TO ESCONDIDO but he's not sure he can convince his pal to tour to promote it.
The Brit reveals grizzled bluesman Cale isn't fond of travelling and will only perform at venues he can drive to from his home in Escondido, California. Clapton explains, "As long as we're in his neck of the woods, I think it will be agreeable to him. He doesn't like getting on buses or planes. "He won't even go in the elevator. We're staying at the Four Seasons in LA, and his room is on the second floor."

Blues Musicians work together to aid Riegelwood families
Some of you heard about the terrible storms we had recently in Riegelwood North Carolina. An entire section of the city next to us was wiped off the map. Homes flattened and lives lost.
One of our area blues societies (Roots & Blues Alliance) is holding a fundraising concert to help out. All of the details are below. If you cannot make the event but do have a few dollars to spare, please call them directly to make a donation. Think how you would want to be treated if your home was blown away.
Thank you for considering this matter as it weighs heavy on many of our areas residents.
Sincerely,
Michele

DOWNLOAD BEATLE SONGS SOON
Reports say that the Beatles are finally making their catalogue available online. Britain's Sunday Times reported that David Munns, the head of EMI Records' North American division, which distributes the group's entire catalogue, told a web-industry conference in San Francisco that the group's music will be available for download, "soon."
MISSISSIPPI BLUES TRAIL UNVEILINGS
Creating the Mississippi Blues Trail is one of the Blues Commission’s primary projects. The Mississippi Blues Trail will be composed of scores of historical markers and interpretive sites, and will include locations throughout the state. The Trail will be developed in phases as funding becomes available. “Phase 1” of the trail will consist of 11 markers that will focus on higher profile locations.
A distinguished panel of historians and Blues scholars has developed an inventory of the most notable Blues sites. Each will be identified with a distinctive cast marker, featuring high resolution maps, photographs and text. These sites will eventually employ the latest technology to allow visitors to hear the sounds associated with each location. A detailed Blues Trail map will also be available that will provide driving directions, GPS coordinates and basic information for each site.
