12 Years of "Where Blues Crosses Over"
The collection of songs and video was compiled
personally by the founder of the label, Thomas Ruf who
started Ruf Records in 1994 for the soul purpose of recording
Luther Allison. Luther's son Bernard Allison
joined the label in 1995 and things started growing from there.
After 12 years in the business, Ruf Records is
inarguably a major blues record label. Those 12 years have
produced 120 blues releases, 1.2 million records sold, 2 Grammy
nominations, and 10 Handy nominations.
Thomas Ruf also wrote the liner notes which detail this
extraordinary journey and why he picked the selection of songs
that he did.

NRG Band
LIVE NRG!
Long Island Blues Society entry for the 2007 International Blues Challenge "BEST SELF-PRODUCED CD."
THE NRG BAND with NICOLE HART is the natural evolution in the Blues/Funk/Soul Genre, aggressively combining a seductive, funky feel with the soulful nuances of The Blues. Under the direction of producer, arranger, and multi-keyboardist
Lance Ong (David Sanborn, Grand Funk Railroad, Pointer Sisters), together with co-writer & lead vocalist Nicole Hart (Billy Joel, Harry Belafonte, Michael Monroe), their original compositions & re-arrangement of classic Blues and R&B material can only be described as: "NRG-ized"! Nicole's timeless, powerful, intoxicating voice is beautifully soul-sweet ~ silky, then gritty ~ classic yet absolutely contemporary, & she is renowned for her electrifying stage presence. Lance Ong's masterful command of the keyboards is undisputed, & he is absolutely one of the most exciting and versatile soloists on the scene today. Bringing the funky feel to the fore is virtuosic bassist,
Vonnie Hudson (The Shades), whose mesmerizing grooves lock tight with hard-hitting percussionist & drummer,
Joe Piteo (Gil Parris).
"Hart can give Sade a blues makeover that is simply moving." Mark "Dr. Blues" Gresser, CD Reviews.

TIPITINA'S FOUNDATION BENEFIT IN
SEATTLE
INSTRUMENTS A-COMIN'
On
Friday, December 8, 2006, The
Highway 99 Blues Club, in
association with the Tipitina's
Foundation of New Orleans, proudly
presents Seattle's first-ever
Instruments A-Comin' featuring
Charmaine Neville and Reggie
Houston's Crescent City
Connection.
Hailed
as New Orleans "best pair of lungs"
by Time Magazine, Charmaine
Neville, along with legendary
saxophonist Reggie Houston (Fats
Domino, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, The
Neville Bros.), both have a long
history of devoting as much of their
time to community service and arts
education as they do to performing.
Instruments A Comin' is a catalyst
that raises awareness of public
music education, and provides
material support for school music
programs. Now, for the first
time, Instruments A Comin' will be
leaving New Orleans and heading to
the Pacific Northwest in what
organizers hope will inspire other
cities to follow suit.
Seattle
musician and accredited New Orleans
Jazz Fest photographer, Jef Jaisun,
first proposed turning the
Houston/Neville show into a
fundraising opportunity for the
Tipitina's Foundation. After
receiving enthusiastic support from
Charmaine, Reggie and Highway 99
club owners Steve Sarkowsky and Ed
Maloney, Jaisun called Tipitina's
Foundation Executive Director Bill
Taylor, who immediately lent his
support as well. next to join the
cause was Northwest painter
Diane Russell,
who graciously donated a museum
quality print of her recently
completed portrait of Reggie Houston
to be auctioned off at the
fundraiser.
Event
organizers hope that other
individuals and businesses will come
forward with cash, sponsorships and
auctionable donations to help raise
money for the Tipitina's Foundation.
Interested parties should contact
Kristin Valinsky at 503.230.0090 or
booking@reggiehouston.com
.
Admission to Seattle's Instruments A
Comin' is $20.00 at the door. The
doors open at 4pm and the show is
scheduled to run from 8:30pm - 1am.
Highway 99 is located at 1414
Alaskan Way (across from Seattle's
Aquarium). For reservations or more
information, the public may call the
club at 206.382.2171, or visit
www.reggiehouston.com
for regularly updated information.

MICK JAGGER'S FATHER PASSES
The
father of Rolling Stone Mick
Jagger died Saturday at age 93,
a spokesman for the singer said.
Joe Jagger was admitted to a
hospital in Kingston, Surrey,
outside London, just over a week ago
after falling in his home, the
spokesman told Britain's Press
Association news agency on condition
of anonymity.
Joe Jagger, who had worked as a
schoolteacher, died late Saturday
afternoon of pneumonia, he said.
Mick Jagger, 63, who has been in the
United States on the Stones' "A
Bigger Bang" tour, travelled to
Britain Friday to see his father and
flew back to Las Vegas later the
same day. He was to perform there
Saturday night, the spokesman said,
adding that the show would go ahead
as scheduled.
The spokesman said the Jagger family
would not make any further comment.
He gave no details of Joe Jagger's
funeral, saying only that it would
be private. Mick Jagger's mother,
Eva, died in 2000. She and Joe
Jagger had two children, Mick and
Chris.

RUTH BROWN ON
LIFE SUPPORT
Ruth
Brown, the
Grammy- and
Tony-award
songstress from
Portsmouth, is
on life support
at a hospital
near Las Vegas,
according to a
report in the
Las Vegas Review
Journal.
Family members
contacted Friday
did not want to
discuss Brown's
condition but
did not deny the
report. The
newspaper
reported that
Brown, 78, has
been in
intensive care
at a Henderson,
Nev., hospital
for several days
under an assumed
name. She
suffered a
stroke in 2000
and wrestled
with other
health
conditions that
occasionally
made her cancel
performances.
Brown, an I.C.
Norcom High
School graduate,
became an
important blues
star in the
1950s, with
"Teardrops From
My Eyes" as her
first No. 1 hit.
Brown was so
successful that
her label,
Atlantic
Records, was
once known as
"The House That
Ruth Built."
Brown later
became pivotal
in fighting for
royalties music
companies owed
artists.
"Miss Rhythm,"
as she was
crowned, faded
from view in the
mid-1960s.
Comedian Redd
Foxx helped
her re-emerge in
the late '70s,
after she worked
as a domestic
servant, cook
and bus driver.
Brown came back
hard in the
1980s, appearing
in John
Waters'
"Hairspray " and
winning a Grammy
and Tony in 1989
for "Blues on
Broadway " and
"Black and
Blue,"
respectively.
She was inducted
in the Rock and
Roll Hall of
Fame in 1993.
"Ruth is such an
influence to so
many people,
especially here
in her hometown,
" said Charles
Whitehurst, a
former city
councilman and
longtime Brown
friend. He said
he'd hoped to
work with her on
creating a music
hall of fame
that would
include her
memorabilia.
Brown has lived
in Las Vegas on
and off since
the 1950s. She
settled in
Henderson, Nev.,
in the
mid-1990s.
Despite her
stroke in 2000,
she retained her
upbeat and
spunky character
in public. In
May, she
appeared at a
blues festival
in Portsmouth
named for her,
and she garnered
giggles at the
Portsmouth
Notables banquet
that honored her
and Missy
Elliott,
among others.
"I'm so happy to
be here," the
keynote speaker
told the crowd.
"And if I get
lucky, Missy
will give me a
new record."

ROBERT
LOCKWOOD
JR.
UPDATE

Robert Lockwood Jr. was moved from intensive care on November 14th.
His speech was slurred and he'd lost movement in one of his hands.
Unfortunately later the same day, one of his lungs collapsed and he has been returned to intensive care.
BRITANNIA RULES THE AIR WAVES
Brits dominate the list of 36 acts that received platinum awards from the Intl. Federation of Phonographic Industry for albums that sell more than 1 million copies in Europe.
British musicians have 19 platinum discs so far this year while American acts have 12, the British Phonographic Industry said on Thursday.
ERIC CLAPTON'S DAUGHTER LAUNCHES SOLO CAREER
Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton's daughter Ruth is launching a solo singing career. The 21-year-old is the result of a brief relationship Clapton had with her mother Yvonne Kelly while he recorded on the Caribbean island of Montserrat in the 1980s.
Ruth has already supported her father, providing backing vocals for him at concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden, and is now setting off alone. Her first gig is at a nightclub in Doncaster, England.
She says, "I've sung backing vocals at a few of my dad's gigs, but this is a bit different. For a start I'll be doing my own songs, so I'll be putting myself out there really, and that would scare anyone. In Doncaster, I'll be able to see everyone's face in the audience."

Gregg Allman and Friends are bringing rock and roll along with the blues to
the Regency Center in San Francisco on 11/24 and to the Grand Sierra Resort (formerly the Reno Hilton) on 11/25. Allman's most visible contribution to rock music began with his role as the lead singer, organist and songwriter for The Allman Brothers Band, founded in 1969.
Although most of his fame came from his ties with The Allman Brothers Band, Allman carved out a solo career in the mid-70s. From there, his music career skyrocketed. In 1995, Allman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and most recently received a Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in September 2006.

13th Annual ‘Snowball’ to Collect Toys for Needy Children
(Wayne, NJ) On Sunday, December 10th, the annual SNOWBALL will be held at The Lakeside Pub, located on Packanack Lake at 58 Lake Drive West in Wayne, NJ. This is a grass roots event that was started thirteen years ago by a group of friends who wanted to give something back to the community. For the past several years, the toys they have collected have been donated to the Paterson Fire Department, whose volunteers personally distribute them to underprivileged kids in their city.
This year’s show will feature the talents of Silk City Records recording artist Son Lewis (pictured at left) with Jerry Fierro, performing a mix of traditional and contemporary blues. A native of New Jersey, Son Lewis has played numerous festivals and fairs, received airplay on over 70 stations worldwide, and has shared the stage with such notable acts as John Hammond, Rick Danko, Clarence“Gatemouth” Brown and Elvin Bishop.
The special guest will be blues guitar legend Hubert Sumlin, whose last album, About Them Shoes, included performances by Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, David Johansen and Levon Helm, and was nominated for a Grammy in 2006 for Best Traditional Blues Album. Mr. Sumlin’s resume includes a 20-plus year relationship with Chicago Blues giant Howlin’ Wolf, a stint with Muddy Waters, and performances with Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Eric Clapton,Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Elvis Costello, to name but a few.
This event is open to the public and there is no cover change. Instead, patrons are asked to bring an unwrapped gift for a child between the ages of 3 and 12. Cash donations will be accepted in lieu of (or in addition to) a gift, and all funds collected will be forwarded to The Joey Bella Memorial Fund, a local charity that was established to aid the families of children with life-threatening, catastrophic illness. The event starts at 3 PM and ends at approximately 7 PM.
JUG BAND REVIVAL

Some of the earliest blues bands were the jug bands that originated in Memphis and Louisville back in the 1920s and '30s. After decades of neglect, interest in Jug Band music revived during the '60s and now it's in another world-wide renaissance in the 2000s. Though many jug bands play more than blues, their roots are firmly planted in the fertile clay of the blues.
Minneapolis/St. Paul's annual Battle of the Jug Bands occurs during February while Central California hosts two Jug Band festivals: The International Jug Band Festival just celebrated its fourth anniversary in the gold rush-era town of Sutter Creek, CA. (in the beginning of October) and the new San Francisco Jug Band Festival was held at the end of August. News about both of them and the non-profit California Jug Band Association can be found at www.jugfest.org. News and information about jug bands in general can be found at www.jugband.org which is separately operated.
A JOYFUL NOISE: BLUES WILL LIFT YOUR SPIRITS AT THE BROWARD COUNTY LIBRARIES
(Broward County, Florida) Broward County residents soon will be singing the blues, but that's a good thing. Broward County Library has announced a new program designed to introduce and entertain residents with a taste of the soulful sound.
Blues School, set to debut in February, will give music lovers a chance to see movies, listen to music and spend an evening listening to acclaimed blues musician Guy Davis. Tim Bain, who has helped organize the program, said he hopes it will find a home in Broward. "We hope it is something that will grow into an annual event," he said.
The kickoff of the program will coincide with Black History Month. Cinema of the Blues will be from Feb. 5 to 9 at the Main Library in Fort Lauderdale and will include showings of The Blues Brothers, Ray, Lady Sings the Blues and Crossroads.
A Blues School program is set for Feb. 10 at the Main Library. University of Miami music professor Chuck Bergeron will talk about the origin of the blues and its influence on other music styles. The two-hour program also will feature live music.

ERIC
LINDELL'S MUSIC ON BOSTON LEGAL
The
latest indication of blues/soul singer and
guitarist Eric Lindell's upward career
trajectory? William Shatner dancing in
drag to one of his songs.
A scene in the Halloween
episode of "Boston Legal" featured Shatner,
costumed as a woman, cutting a rug to Lindell's
"Give It Time." The song is from "Change in the
Weather," Lindell's national debut, released in
April by Chicago's Alligator Records.
He watched "Boston Legal" at
a neighbor's house. Compared to the other music
on the show, his song sounded "totally raunchy,"
Lindell said this week, laughing. "It didn't
sound as slick as everything else. But I guess
it worked."
"Change
in the Weather" has sold just fewer than 10,000
copies, a respectable total for a new roots
music artist. Exposure via "Boston Legal" and
other TV shows helps. A second Lindell song,
"Uncle John," turned up on an episode of
"Supernatural."
Beyond the benefits of the
immediate publicity, an artist also receives
licensing fees, which continue to roll in as TV
shows are repackaged on DVD. Years ago, Lindell
had the foresight to register and self-publish
his songs via ASCAP, the performing rights
organization, anticipating the day when someone
might license them for TV or movies. Alligator
actively pitches the music to film and TV
producers, as well as radio stations.
RUF RECORDS SIGNS
JEFF HEALEY
What
makes Jeff Healey different from other
blues-rockers is also what used to keep some
listeners from accepting him as anything other
than a novelty - the fact that the blind
guitarist plays his Fender Stratocaster on his
lap, not standing up. With the guitar in his
lap, Healey can make unique bends and hammer-ons,
making his licks different and more elastic than
most of the competition.
Healey lost his sight at the age of one, after
developing eye cancer. He began playing guitar when
he was three years old and began performing with his
band Blues Direction at the age of 17.
Healey formed the Jeff Healey Trio in 1985,
releasing one single on their own Forte record
label, which led to a contract with Arista
Records. The Jeff Healey Trio released their
debut album, See the Light, in 1988 and the
guitarist immediately developed a devoted following
in blues-rock circles. Featuring the hit single
"Angel Eyes," the record went platinum in the U.S.

Healey
has been keeping busy, with cameos in the Patrick
Swayze movie "Roadhouse", running his own
nightclub in Toronto, and dividing his performing
time
between his blues band and his Jazz Band The Jazz
Wizards (where Healey is the trumpet player).
Jeff Healey's first release with blues label Ruf
Records is scheduled for June 2007.
