NEWS FLASH

Bonnie Raitt and her ensemble travel on buses powered by biodiesel, part of her effort to rely less on fossil fuels

After nearly 40 years of relentless touring, Bonnie Raitt is doing her best to soften the footprint she leaves behind on the earth.

Instead of rolling around this massive continent in a cloud of fossil fuel fumes, the veteran blues and R&B performer will be traveling across Western Canada on a bus fuelled by biodiesel.

"We run all our buses and trucks on biodiesel. We've run on 99-per-cent bio the whole tour," Raitt said over the phone from her northern California home, where she had a two-day break before boarding the tour bus again to head north to British Columbia, Canada.

"We're basically promoting a way to get the economy and the environment and our foreign policy solved in one fell swoop by figuring out why we have to be addicted to oil. Why can't we switch over to something that's going to help our economy and help the farmers?"

Raitt's legions of longtime fans follow her for her remarkable musical talent, but the 56-year-old would also like her audience to learn a little something while they're being entertained. That notion is bred from a life-long association with political activism and a Quaker background that instilled in Raitt the motivation to do good wherever possible.

"Quakers are known for wanting to give back".

"Ban the bomb and the civil rights movement and the native American struggle for justice -- those things were very, very front-burner in my childhood, as were the ideas of working for peace and if you have more than you need, then you share it with people who don't."

Raitt's track record of sharing and giving back is exhausting -- from her environmental activism in the mid-'70s to her current efforts to help those left homeless by hurricane Katrina.

CLIFFORD ANTONE DAY IN AUSTIN

City of Austin recognizes the man who made Austin's music scene great.

Some would decree every day is Clifford Antone Day in Austin, but the City of Austin is formally giving October 28 to the Austin legend. This Saturday, October 28, 2006, Mayor Will Wynn will proclaim it Clifford Antone Day in Austin.

The city will unveil a historical marker at that ceremony to commemorate the club and remember Antone. Of course there will be music, including short performances by Derek O'Brien, Jimmie Vaughan, and blues legend James Cotton.

Antone passed away May 22 of this year, and would be celebrating his 57th birthday this week. Antone helped launch the music careers of well-known artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Los Lonely Boys, Sue Foley, and Candye Kane.

"Clifford Antone's contributions to the City of Austin go far beyond just his music connections, " said Mayor Will Wynn. "His continuous involvement with community groups that helped everyone from kids at American Youthworks to folks displaced by Hurricane Katrina exemplified the best of Austin. Clifford may be gone but his presence is still felt all over town. We should all work to ensure his legacy survives."

The following week, on Nov. 2, Antone's nightclub presents the great Maceo Parker and his band at the Austin Music Hall. This show is a tribute to Clifford Antone and will raise money to benefit the fundraiser "Help Clifford Help Kids, " which Antone founded in 2000.

The Clifford Antone birthday celebration continues at Antone's Nightclub this Saturday night at 213 W. 5th St. with a special show by Jimmie Vaughan and the Tilt-a-Whirl Band headlining the stage.

Watermelon Slim Hit By Car, but the show goes on!

(The Daily O' Collegian-Oklahoma City) An Oklahoma City musician was hit by a car driven by a University of Oklahoma student at walkaround Friday about 6:30 p.m.

Bill Homans, 57, also known as “Watermelon Slim,” was crossing University Street toward the Beta Theta Pi house, where he was scheduled to play with his band during walkaround, when a gray Toyota 4Runner crashed into him.

OU student, Danny Vo, 18, was driving the sports-utility vehicle.

Although police had not closed the streets at this time, the streets were filled with people.

Slim told police no damage was done except for maybe a sprained wrist and declined any medical assistance.

Despite the accident, the show still went on.

“I work real well when wounded,” he said.

The former OSU graduate student said although he probably couldn’t play the guitar, he could still sing and play the harmonica.

The student who hit Slim apologized several times to the musician, but Slim assured the student he was OK.

“Now, young man, I’m sorry to cause you this inconvenience,” Slim told the shaken-up student whose car hit him.

This isn’t the first time an accident hasn’t stopped Slim.

During his truck-driving career, he fell 13 feet flat on his back, he said.

“And I got up and drove that 18-wheeler home,” Slim said. “That’s just the way I do.”

Slim has been playing music since he was 18 and has been recognized as “one of the most exciting and legitimate contemporary blues artists,” according to the musician’s Web site.

From his watermelon farming and to teaching himself the slide guitar on a $5 guitar and a Zippo as the slide, Slim’s experiences provide inspiration for his music, according to the Web site.

Slim moved away from Stillwater to Oklahoma City about two years ago but has made appearances in the town, including his recent performance at the Stillwater Blues Festival.

“I’m your local, cultural icon,” Slim said.

Candye Kane and All Star Cast leave for Europe

Seven Time San Diego Blues award winner, Candye Kane will embark on a three-week tour of the Netherlands from October 26 to November 12.

Kane has assembled a stellar band for this amazing and philanthropic tour, United by Music. www.unitedbymusic.nl The band features former Mighty Flyers Bassist Bill Stuve, Canadian saxophonist Johnny Ferreira, Harp player Billy Watson, Boogie Woogie pianist Sue Palmer, trumpeter Robbie Smith, Guitarist Heine Andersen and Drummer Evan Caleb.

United By Music, in the planning stages for over a year, features native Dutch singers who have overcome various levels of disabilities, performing onstage. These young adults competed with other young hopefuls, for a chance to appear onstage with the Candye Kane band. All will perform songs in English. The repertoire includes blues standards, Candye Kane songs and some of the guest singer’s own original compositions. This inspirational program has been a transformative experience for both the singers and musicians involved, as they overcame obstacles and stereotypes and came together to share the healing powers of blues music.

While in Amsterdam, Kane will record a track with Ana Popovic. Kane's spring 2007 release on RUF Records, her eighth CD; will include the song "Female Trouble" written for the John Waters film of the same name, by drag queen diva, Divine. Kane's upcoming release will be produced by blues legend Bob Margolin and features guest guitar performances by Popa Chubby, Nick Curran, Junior Watson, Poison Ivy of The Cramps, Dave Alvin, Sue Foley, Kid Ramos and Bob Brozman. The bulk of the recordings will be done in early January 2007 in Hollywood's New King Sound studio.

December will find Candye back on the road in the states, visiting the Northwestern part of the USA, with dates in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and beyond.

The Blues of Danfur

Charlotte, NC is home to some of the finest blues musicians in the country. It is the site of famous juke joints like the Double Door Inn and birthplace to legends like Luke Jordan, who recorded for Victor in Charlotte beginning in 1927. Blues is a particular kind of soul music that originated in the terrified but enlightened imagination of the displaced African slave. Many ancestors of the first bluesman hailed from countries like Darfur. Today, Darfur is in bondage in a way that only the blues can describe. Artists and activists alike must join forces to denounce this terrible injustice.

Eric Clapton Replica "Blackie" Stratocaster

Fender's calling November 24, 2006, Black Friday. It's the day their Custom Shop will release the Eric Clapton Blackie Stratocaster replica to the public exclusively through the Guitar Center chain. 185 of the guitars will be sold in the United States and carry a suggested retail price of $24,000 USD (a portion of the proceeds will go to the Crossroads Centre, Antigua). The Custom Shop Blackie is part of what Fender calls its Tribute Series, but the instrument is more than just a tribute, it's as acurate a replica of the original Blackie (now owned by Guitar Center) as the Custom Shop could make it, "...from the worn-to-the-wood body, to the neck re-shaped by Eric's hand as he played a thousand heartfelt solos, to the unmistakable cigarette burns on the headstock," according to a recent Fender press release.

"Lightning In A Bottle" - Hungry For Music Fundraiser with special performance by "The Nighthawks" on November 12th

(Arlington, Virginia) Hungry For Music with the help of Michael Joy is proud to announce a unique fundraising event. On Nov 12th we will screen the film "Lightning In a Bottle" After the film there will be a special performance by The Nighthawks.

The event will be held at the Arlington Cinema & Draft House on Sunday Nov 12th. Doors will open at 7pm. The film will start at 7:30pm. The Nighthawks will perform directly after the film. There will be a raffle for DVDs of the film and original concert. We are expecting to have DVDs signed by Shemekia Copeland and other stars of the film.

In 2003 Martin Scorsese produced a unprecedented concert to commemorate the Year of the Blues. An amazing line up of performers came together at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Many performers are legends of American blues, some artists outside of the blues world were collaborating with their blues heroes. Artists such as BB King, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Bonnie Raitt, Shemekia Copeland and Robert Cray lent their musical talents. The result is a film that takes the viewer on a journey through the history of the blues. From the birth of the blues in the Delta to the electrified musical energy of Chicago. For more information about the film and to view the trailer please visit the film's websi! te http://www.sonyclassics.com/lightninginabottle

The Nighthawks are Washington's own blues treasure. They are among the top musical acts to come out of the Washington, D.C. area. They were a roots rock band before there was such a thing as “roots rock.” They play a wide variety of music that has appeal to a diverse audience, mixing the blues, rock and soul—along with rockabilly and swing. They’ve played all over the U.S., with the East Coast and Midwest being particular strongholds. And they’ve toured around the world, establishing especially strong followings in Germany and Japan. http://www.thenighthawks.com

All of the proceeds will benefit Hungry For Music. Hungry for Music's mission is to inspire underprivileged children (and others) by bringing positive musical and creative experiences into their lives. Since becoming a non-profit in 1994, Hungry for Music has brought the healing quality of music to thousands of people through its musical instrument donations, concerts, and workshops. We support our programs through memberships, benefit concerts and events, raffles, and the sale of Hungry for Music produced compact discs. www.hungryformusic.org

Advance tickets are $15 at the Arlington Cinema and Draft website http://www.arlingtondrafthouse.com or $17 at the door. A bargain price for a film and a live performance on the same bill.

Jimi is Probably Turning Over in his Grave

Experience Hendrix, L.L.C., the Seattle-based company founded in 1995 by Jimi Hendrix's father and sole heir James Allen ("Al") Hendrix, which owns and administers the Jimi Hendrix music rights including Jimi's songs and sound recordings, has issued a press release disputing a claim by an auction company regarding the sale a one-of-a-kind Jimi Hendrix Collection in The Ocean Tomo Fall 2006 Intellectual Property Auction on October 26 at Capitale in New York City.

According to a rep for Experience Hendrix, the auction winner will be left with a virtually worthless prize, reports TMZ.com. Apparently, what is for sale is a "claim" to Hendrix recordings and songs on behalf of the estate of Frank Jeffery, the father of Jimi's former manager Michael Jeffery. So you wouldn't actually be buying the songs. You'd be buying the rights to a "legal claim" asserting some interest in the songs. To make matters more complicated, or from their perspective simplified, Experience Hendrix says the legal claims have already been settled and that they are worthless. They explained in a statement that, in 1995, Al Hendrix obtained direct ownership of the Hendrix legacy after litigation in the U.S. District Court in Seattle. So, the auction set October 26th may or may not give the buyer any leg to stand on when it comes to controlling any of Hendrix's compositions.

Meanwhile Experience Hendrix has filed a restraining order to ensure all proceeds are paid to Experience Hendrix as part of a $941,000 debt owed by the alleged owner of the properties being auctioned.

THE ROUNDERS SIGN WITH BLIND PIG RECORDS

Blind Pig Records has announced the signing of The Rounders, a young alternative roots band from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.   The band burst on the scene right out of high school, immediately gaining critical acclaim from local media, which praised their refreshing originality and natural ability to capture and enhance the traditions of American roots music while keeping it stripped down, raw, and honest.  By tinkering with familiar forms of music in new and unique ways, the band soon became one of the hottest acts in the area before most of them were of drinking age.

The group has fashioned a unique sound by mining a variety of traditional music forms and adeptly fusing them with elements of modern music.  As guitarist Ryan Taylor put it, "We like to make old music sound new and new music sound old."  By piecing together layers of acoustic and electric blues, Southern folk, backporch country, and ragtime melody, The Rounders have created a true tapestry of American roots music for a new generation.

The band has released two CDs on their own label, "Little Bitty Can Of Worms" and "Now-A-Days Songs,"  the latter becoming a staple on college rock radio and XM satellite radio. They were voted the "Best Unsigned Band" by the Oklahoma Blues Society and sponsored to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2002. They also won the "Underground Talent Search" contest sponsored by a local commercial rock station, competing against a number of alternative rock bands.

Label president Edward Chmelewski said, "Signing these guys was a bit of a departure for us, but we were so taken by the creativity and freshness of their music.  We immediately heard something new and distinctive here, imbued with an infectious energy and enthusiasm that puts a smile on your face."

The band line-up consists of guitarist Michael Stone, guitarist Ryan Taylor, who also pens most of the group's songs, singer Brian Whitten, drummer Stu Williamson, and bassist Dave Spindle.  The first CD for Blind Pig, entitled, Wish I Had You, will be released in late January.
