Truth and Lies (DVD)

One of the most successful rock bands in history owes its existence to the juke blues of the American South. Named after a Muddy Waters tune, The Rolling Stones have courted controversy since their founding. This comes through clearly in Truth and Lies, a new DVD collecting archival news footage to tell the story of the Stones, as musical, commercial, and journalistic phenomena.

Truth recounts the band’s genesis in of all places a jazz club in Ealing today called the Red Room. They were there to hear Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. One of the singers who sometimes worked with him was named Mick Jagger.

Their early work was heavily informed by r&b, covering Chuck Berry tunes and touring with the likes of Bo Diddley. The Stones recognized the earthy appeal of those devil blues. As one commentator David Hepworth explains: “Certainly, you were being introduced to this world of extraordinary kind of slick sexual metaphor about “little red roosters” and “down the road a piece” and juke joints and highways, and this kind of dark exotic landscape of the delta and the road up to Chicago. And we [in England] had no geographical reference points for it at all. But Mick Jagger made it sound so attractive.”

As the Stones career progressed, the rock and psychedelic increased, and somewhat at the expense of the blues. The attitude persisted though. Some, Charlie Watts in particular, would return to their blues roots periodically. Of course, as Truth makes clear, the Stones became an industry unto themselves.

NEWS FLASH

Pete Townshend Criticizes Ageing Rockers

The Who legend Pete Townshend has slammed ageing rockers - including himself - for continuing to tour into their fifties and sixties. The star, 61, has lashed out at Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones over their longevity as rock stars, insisting the novelty is simply in the fact that they are still going at all - and not because they are exciting to watch.

He says, "I don't think the big bands are going to be able to do this for much longer. I don't want to see Bob Dylan, I don't want to go out and see the Stones. I wouldn't pay money to go and see The Who, not even with new songs. I wouldn't pay money to see Crosby, Stills And Nash. They make me sick. When I say that, I mean I'm ageist about it.

"Somebody gave me tickets for Marlene Dietrich's last concert in London. She looked fantastic under the lights, but you knew it was an 80-year-old woman held together with glue and string."

The 1st National Women In Blues Concert

Saturday November 18th, 2006

Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina

The MARRZ Theatre on Front Street

Marrz.net ($10 in Advance, $15 at the Door)

It started as an idea to bring a few women from the region together and has become the 1st National Women in Blues Concert.

Michele Seidman (Michele and the Midnight Blues) felt women were under represented at the blues festivals. She wanted to make an event about women and for women. With help from The Actors Edge, they will do just that. Someone once said no one wants to hear a woman sing the blues but if you look at history and the charts, they could not have been further from the truth. The reactions to this event already proves that statement wrong. Emails have come from Europe asking for details and the Women in Blues Concert was only announced to a small number of people prior to this release. If you go to most major festivals today, woman are a side note and rarely featured yet on the charts it is obvious people like to hear women in the blues. This concert is about the women as it was intended.

This year’s line up has artists from across the country giving it national status. Michele Lundeen the Queen of Steam is coming in from San Diego California. Valerie June the Road House Gal from Memphis Tennessee joins in as does Big Red and the Soul Benders from Arkansas, keeping the Delta connection strong. Add in Shelly Magee from South Carolina and some of Wilmington’s finest, including The Dynamic Thermo-Tones featuring Niki Sharp, the areas Grandmother of Blues Rose Lucas (Charlie & Rose Lucas), and the concert founders band Michele and the Midnight Blues who recently started getting international attention due to radio airplay.

It is not just about the music either. It is about the women and several women’s groups will be there, including

Domestic Violence, Rape Crisis, Breast Cancer Awareness and more. This concert is by women and for woman. More details are available on the web page and the myspace site with details being added daily. Michele said “This got bigger faster than I thought.  Next year we can turn this in to several days of the best of Women in Blues with all the women who want to play”.  “I would love to see the next Women in Blues concert run for 4 days and have everyone from Bonnie Raitt and Shirley King to Deborah Coleman and Juke Joint Judy”. We have already had interest in sponsoring the 2nd concert from national entities, which suggest this is just the start.

For the husbands who enjoy blues stick around but for those who don't there is plenty of golf in the area and a great children’s museum. Not to mention The USS North Carolina Battleship, the Fort Fisher Aquarium, area beaches and a wonderful Historic Downtown worth a slow afternoon stroll on the river. You will not regret your trip to the Cape Fear Coast for the 1st National Women in Blues Festival. From the music to the scent of magnolia in the air it is the perfect place to bring together some of the Women in Blues.

Digital Is Driving First Half World Music Sales

Sales of digital music in the first half of 2006 rose 106% to US$945 million when compared with the first six months of last year. Globally, digital sales now account for 11 per cent of the total recorded music market worldwide, up from 5.5 per cent in December 2005.

The US is still leading the digital revolution, with 18 per cent of recorded music sales now being made through digital channels. Digital music sales in the US increased by 84 per cent to US$ 513 million in the first six months of 2006.

Digital music also accounts for a significant part of the overall market in South Korea (51%), Japan (11%), Italy (9%) and the UK (8%).

The explosion in digital music services, spurred by consumer demand and a widening array of delivery channels, has seen online and mobile music sales grow from $US134 million in the first half of 2004 to US$945 million in the first half of 2006.

In Japan, Italy and Spain mobile dominates the digital market, accounting for 85%, 76% and 78% of overall sales respectively. Online downloading is more prominent in markets such as the UK, Germany and the US, where online sales account for 70%, 69% and 64% of digital sales respectively.

Physical music sales declined in the first half period, down by ten per cent worldwide. This led to total music sales falling by four per cent in the period to $8.4 billion in trade values (US$13.7 billion in retail values). Piracy and competition for consumer spending contributed to the first half fall.

There was growth in some markets, such as Japan (12%), South Korea (5%) and Australia (6%), counter-balanced by declines in Germany (-4%), the US (-7%) and France (-9%).

Biographer Nick Tosches' study of Dean Martin has been named the Greatest Rock & Roll Book of all time in a new Blender poll. "Dino: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Dreams" beat out Peter Guralnick's "Last Train To Memphis" and the Ego Trip's "Book Of Rap Lists" to top the men's magazine poll.

Yanks picked for British Rock Hall

Americans James Brown and Bon Jovi will be inducted into Britain's rock hall of fame next month.

The pair will join previously announced inductees Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, Dusty Springfield, Brian Wilson and Beatles producer Sir George Martin.

The Music Hall of Fame was established two years ago to honor artists who have contributed to the British music scene regardless of national origin.

The two new honorees are also stars in the United States. Bon Jovi was a pioneering Jersey rock outfit while Brown is the immortal "Godfather of Soul."

The induction ceremony will be held Nov. 14 at Alexandra Palace in London and will be aired live on BBC2 radio, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

Wilson will perform, as will Patti LaBelle and Joss Stone, who will sing a pair of the late Springfield's 1960s-era hits.

Great Harpist Snooky Pryor Passes

(Blues Foundation, Memphis TN) Our friend
Snooky Pryor passed away about 1am this morning, October 19. Only in the last few years has Snooky Pryor finally begun to receive full credit for the mammoth role he played in shaping the amplified Chicago blues harp sound during the postwar era.

He's long claimed he was the first harpist to run his sound through a public-address system around the Windy City — and since nobody's around to refute the claim at this point, we'll have to accept it! He's still quite active musically, having cut two potent discs for Austin, TX-based Antone's Records in recent years.

James Edward Pryor was playing harmonica at the age of eight in Mississippi. The two Sonny Boys were influential to Pryor's emerging style, as he played around the Delta. He hit Chicago for the first time in 1940, later serving in the Army at nearby Fort Sheridan. Playing his harp through powerful Army PA systems gave Pryor the idea to acquire his own portable rig once he left the service. Armed with a primitive amp, he dazzled the folks on Maxwell Street in late 1945 with his massively amplified harp.

Pryor made some groundbreaking 78s during the immediate postwar Chicago blues era. Teaming with guitarist
Moody Jones, he waxed "Telephone Blues" and "Boogie" for Planet Records in 1948, encoring the next year with "Boogy Fool"/"Raisin' Sand" for JOB with Jones on bass and guitarist Baby Face Leroy Foster in support. Pryor made more more classic sides for JOB (1952-53), Parrot (1953), and Vee-Jay ("Someone to Love Me"/"Judgment Day") in 1956, but commercial success never materialized. He wound down his blues-playing in the early '60s, finally chucking it all and moving to downstate Ullin, IL, in 1967.

For a long while, Pryor's whereabouts were unknown. But the 1987 Blind Pig album, Snooky, produced by guitarist
Steve Freund, announced to the world that the veteran harpist was alive and well, his chops still honed. A pair of solid discs for Antone's, Too Cool to Move and In This Mess Up to My Chest, followed. Pryor stays just as busy as he cares to nowadays, still ensconced in Ullin (where life is good and the fishing is easy). by Bill Dahl from All Music Guide

Marcia Ball Seeks Musical Instruments for Katrina Kids

The school across the street from Charmaine Neville's house in New Orleans has finally re-opened. The students there are in need of musical instruments. If you have or know someone who has an unused band instrument in good repair, please contact Marcia via her website.

Feel free to spread the word. You never can tell who played flute in high school and still has one under the bed. Marcia is going to New Orleans in December and will take whatever she can gather then.

If someone has an instrument that is located in an area outside of Austin, NOLA Relief may be able to help with shipping and the instrument could be sent directly to Charmaine.

The need, like the beat, goes on. If she is buried under a mountain of instruments, they could be placed all over the Gulf Coast. NOLA Relief is still sending money to New Orleans musicians through your generous contributions.

BLUES ARTISTS ON THE RISE

The Blues Festival E-Guide and Sonicbids Is proud to introduce you to our next "Blues Artist on the Rise"...Mark Kerr

Mark is considered by many to be one of the Hottest modern Blues Guitarist on the stage today. he currently resides in Greenwood , Louisiana.

Tennessee native (now relocated), Mark Kerr never found success beyond his grasp. From the age of twelve his course was clear, and from his earliest days in music he has built bridges that have connected him, not to his peers alone, but to the world at large.

Mark picked up the guitar at the age of twelve and before long, he was receiving recognition for his musical abilities. Where as many kids at twelve years of age may be content to watch television or to hang out with others of their own age, Mark had one singularly focused ambition. He wanted to become a musician. And so devoted was he to this pursuit, he would often fall to sleep at night with his guitar "strapped on."

By the time he graduated from high school, he would be rewarded for his ambition. As he tells it, " all of the high school first chair seniors in my state that played an instrument in their jazz band were given a chance to perform before a panel of judges in their instrument class. Given a chance to win these scholarships, I was the only one from my jazz band to win."

Rather than pursuing this scholarship, he became involved in a rock and roll band and started seeing the world. "I really had no interest to keep going to school., I had had enough of that for a while. I was so hungry inside to graduate and get into a road band and start seeing the world and making a living doing it that school was the last thing on my mind. I was ready to start chasing the dream. "

Mark would eventually play with Percy Sledge and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Curtis Mayfield's Impressions.

After thirteen years of touring, Mark attended Northwestern State University where he studied music theory, while working very diligently on his jazz, blues and rock skills. Mark was nominated for Musician of the Year in 2006 by The Academy of Texas Music, for his guitar work on "One Drink Away From The Blues".

Today Mark can say reflecting back, "I no longer drink. I started to see if I was going to be what I wanted to be in this business that there was no longer room for that. A person can go a lot farther with a clean, clear, non-polluted brain than with one."

Yep, the road to success is a long and arduous one, but to steer it effectively, you have to have a clear head. That one drink could be "One Drink Away From The Blues."

"One Drink Away From The Blues" his debut CD, is a well rounded hard hitting package of blues with rock and funk influences. In the style of Gary Moore and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Spiced up with a little jazz/rock fusion in the lead guitar.

Mark is back in the studio working on his second album.  He'll be touring blues festivals in 2007 in support of his new CD.

For more information, and to hear songs from his 2005 release "One Drink Away From the Blues" visit Mark's website http://markkerrltd.com

CONTINUED TALES FROM PACIFIC BLUES …

As you may have read last week (see archives), we had an amazingly fun time on the 1st West Coast Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise (Oct 3-7) roundtrip from San Diego to Cabo. There was much dancing with wild abandon to the variety of great music. Larry McCray was one fav as was Slick Ballinger. Slick said it was his last "blues" gig and would now be playing gospel ... I'm glad I got to finally hear him as he is quite a talent. Zac Harmon, Taj Mahal, Tommy Castro, Janiva Magness, funk and the unfailing power and message of The Original Lowriders Band (bassist, drummer, lead guitarist. harpman from WAR) who I was thrilled to be invited to sing with, and so much more. All the artists aboard were truly on their game in this festive atmosphere. There were not only concerts and piano bars going strong but full-on jams until all hours, workshops, networking, eating galore, silent auction, autograph sessions, merchandise, costume contests (Kaati and I actually won the Mardi Gras Krewe contest)! Too fun.

Here are more excerpts from cruisers about their adventure …

WOW.... Where do I start? From the minute we boarded the ship until the time they pulled us off, it was non stop FUN!

Favorite moment: Learn'n to cook with three of the best, Irma Thomas, Cookie (Koko Taylor's daughter-in-law) and James “Ice Pick” Harman. What is better then good food and music. Learn’n down home style cook’n while hav’n a hearty laugh.

Favorite musical moments: The Harmonica Blowout. Mark Hummel brought four very different Mississippi Saxophone players together. Kim Wilson, James Harman and Lee Oskar along with Hummel …All just good friends play'n and hav'n fun with each other and only the “Blues Cruisers” got to be apart of it! Can I get a witness?

Best Experience: Being on the ship with good friends, old and new and my sweetheart… Hang’n the full moon outside our porthole, shining on the water and making plans to do it all again next year.

Cliff "BluesManCA" Dye - Van Nuys, CA

Blues Fan/Photographer/Graphic Artist

(Hey Cliff, was hoping that “full moon” was of the planet sort and it was not just “drafty” in your room? HA!)

Right in the middle of Larry McCray's second show, a couple walks in and sits next to me in the second row. They had been talking loudly to each other prior to sitting down and continued. Larry had brought the band way down and was in the middle of an intentionally quiet solo. I was going to tell the couple to please be quiet, when the man turns to me and almost shouts "That's Larry McCray! He is the sheeeeeet man!" I smiled at him and nodded in agreement and was just going to ask him to keep it down, when he jumps up in the seat and yells out, "Hey LARRY!" McCray loses his concentration now, and finally looks up. (I am positive that Larry could hear the noisy couple from the moment they entered the theater!) He stands up a bit in disgust, and then realizes who it is. With a huge smile on his face, Larry says, "Hey Lester, get on up here!" It was Lazy Lester, who went on to steal the show singing "Rain In My Heart". At the end of the set when Lester came back down I asked him if that was his song or Slim Harpo's. He said "Oh, that was Slims. Slims sang that one. I only played the drums on that record. I had Larry and Lester pose together for this shot and they both asked me to email it to them. Lester added, "I knew that kid was going to be somebody when I first heard him play. I've known the whole family since they were all just little kids."

Barney Roach - Del Mar, CA

While at the Long Beach Blues Festival, my friend Suzy and I saw that there was going to be a 4 day West Coast Blues Cruise. Close enough to Ojai to not have to worry about flights, short enough that work and kids wouldn't miss us too much... the cruise became our new fantasy. Our fantasy was definitely manifested in the cruise! Although we were unfamiliar with most of the lineup, the talent onboard was phenomenal. Zac Harmon, Chico Banks Band, The Lowriders, Deborah Coleman, Larry McCray....The last ProJam in itself was worth the trip. I don't think I've danced so much in my life, and I had been afraid there wouldn't be enough dancing going on. My image of today's blues lovers’ crowd has been permanently altered and the cruise was the perfect venue.

Sharon Seiders - Ojai, CA

The cruise was truly a blast. You may get on the ship a total stranger to most, but you won't leave as one. The best thing about the cruise after the music of course, was the people. I didn't meet one person that wasn't willing to talk. The camaraderie was unbelievable, by the second day it felt like a cruise full of family and friends. The music was awesome, what more can you say? The Lowriders of course showed why under a different name they were known and still are one of the greatest jam bands ever. Irma Thomas and her band as well as Taj and the Boneshakers were definitely not to be missed. Hard to pick favorites when everyone was at the top of their game. Only way to sum it up. I started to wear my lifejacket everyday, cause even though the seas were calm the ship was rockin and rollin with the Blues.

 Andre' Thomas

Thanks for the opportunity to let you all know just what a great time we had cruizin'. My wife Monique and I were invited to fill a suite that some friends couldn't and were graciously accepted into their group of now six. We've always been fans of bluegrass, folk and other forms of acoustic music but have never taken the time to go out and hear blues up close. What a treat to be up close with those who live this music and to feel their music in our bones. The intimacy of the small venues and the spirit in those around us was an awesome experience. Though we didn't get to hear all of the bands we were in heaven with the voice of Koko Taylor, the slide and stories of Doug MacLeod, the energy of Zac Harmon and the fun of Janiva Magness. Not that the other bands that we saw were slouches, these were the icing on the cake. Thanks to our friends Becky and Mark, Barbra and Terry we immediately signed up for the next Pacific Blues Cruise. Long live the blues and all those that carry the torch.

Rich - San Jose, Ca

Repeat after me: Eat, drink, party. Eat, drink, party. Eat, drink, party. Eat, drink, party.... You get the idea. Five days at sea with great musicians, oodles of friends from around the world, and a non-stop vibe of way too much fun leaves your soul a shakin'. Zac Harmon grooved, Janiva Magness swooned and the Lowriders took us on their own very special cruise. I heard blues I had heard before, blues I never have heard before and blues I will never hear again.  This is the kind of thing that makes life a true pleasure.  What time does the next boat sail? I can't wait to do it all again.

Michael Kinsman - San Diego, CA

There’s a reason why they call it Legendary!

Mary Ann Haskell - San Diego, CA

 ........................................................................................................................................

The 2nd West Coast LRBC (Oct 13-20 to Mexican Riviera) will start booking Nov 15th for returnees and Dec 1st for virgins. It’s pretty cool to be able to just hang for days in row, dig the music we love, bump into or have a casual meal with not only old and new friends from around the globe (literally) but also artists and all those behind the scenes making it all happen. Once again a huge thanks to Roger Naber and his fine Staff for an unforgettable West Coast bluesy, throwdown. Yeh!

Hope to see you next year… And be sure and tell ‘em the Blues Festival Guide referred ya!

Cheers, Michele (Editor) & Kaati (Publisher)
